Midlantic Reports Record Earnings

EDISON - Midlantic Banks Inc. has reported record annual earnings for the seventh consecutive year, as well as for the fourth quarter of 1984. For the year, consolidated net income increased 33.1 percent to a record $65,035 million, or $4.01 per common share on a fully diluted

basis, from the $48,857 million, or $3.45 per share earned in 1983. For the three-month period ended Dec. 31, 1984, consolidated net income rose to $18,003 million, compared to the $14,648 million for the fourth quarter of 1983. Fully diluted earnings per common share of $1.06

increased from the $.93 reported for the same period last year. THESE RESULTS reflect the acquisition of Greater Jersey Bancorp, in 1983 and Union Trust Co. of Wildwood in 1984, as well as a two-for-one common stock split May 1, 1984. Robert Van Buren, chairman and chief executive officer, stated that "1984 was a year of significant progress for Midlantic during which we achieved a 1 percent return on average assets, an 18.03 percent return on average shareholders' equity, and earnings which grew in excess of 15 percent, all exceeding our corporate financial objectives." VAN BUREN stated that Midlantic continued its successful statewide expansion activities during 1984 with the acquisition of Union Trust Co. of Wildwood. In December, Midlantic reached an agreement for the Heritage Bancorporation of Jamesburg to join the Midlantic organization. "We believe the combining of Midlantic and Heritage will further contribute to our consistently strong financial performance, and

offer enhanced possibilities for market appreciation and dividend growth for shareholders," he said.

Cape Fishermen Invited to Forum

FORT HANCOCK - The New Jersey Sea Grant Extension Service's second annual Fisherman's Forum, slated for Friday, February 8, and Saturday, February 9, is expected to lure hundreds of commercial fisherman from the South Jersey area, including Cape May County. The forum is open free to the public and will run from 9:30 till 5:30 both days. It will include morning and afternoon panel discussions on topics and technical developments of direct interest to New Jersey's commercial fishing community, over 16 exhibits and demonstrations plus video and film presentations. According to Stu Tweed, the Sea Grant Extension Marine Agent for Cape

May, Cumberland and Salem counties, the Forum is geared toward commer-' cial fisherman, but everyone is welcome. '"Hie forum is a perfect opportunity for anyone who'd just like to know more about commercial fishing and wants a good overall view of what the industry is all about," Tweed said." It's also perfect for anyone who's ever thought about getting into commercial fishing since they'll be able to get a lot of specific information at one location. There's also a lot of exhibits and discussions that will interest the recreational fisherman as well, so we're encouraging everyone to attend." The Fisherman's Forum is being sponsored by the New Jersey Sea Grant Extension Service, the outreach arm of the New Jersey Sea Grant Program, in co-operation with the New Jersey Farm Bureau, the New Jersey Department of Agriculture and the Cape May County Vo-Tech.
