Last week arrangements were made to transport her to Bader field, where she was flown to experts from the New York Aquarium for further care and more swimming room. By now she should have been returned to her natural habitat, the sea. Dick Reese was a celebrity long before he found Rainbow, however.
He grew up along the shores of the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg, Pa. He started canoeing at 12 and bought his first canoe when he was 15. It's been more than a few years since he was a star attraction at the heavily attended annual Harrisburg riverfest, which held as many as 25,000 avid fans in thrall. Paul Beers, in his column in the Harrisburg PatriotNews, said, " Young Reese was probably the greatest canoeist on the Susquehanna since the Indians When teamed with lefthander Charley Rosenbery ... or Rose Zimmerman. Reese was unbeatable in doubles or mixed doubles. In their 17-foot standard canoe, Reese and Rosenbery defeated the Olympic champions Havens Brothers." He dominated the event for eight successive years when he graduated to bigger vessels. On becoming a pilot and later captain in the Merchant Marine he almost always took his favorite form of transportation with him, the bicycle on which he rode thousands of miles in European countries.
