Record Low Rate For State Bonds

TRENTON - The New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund Authority has announced the sale of $61,270,000 in bonds at the lowest interest rate any bond issue by the state, including general obligation bonds, has achieved in this decade. The formal agreement to sell the bonds was approved unanimously by the fivemember authority during a public meeting. Under the terms of the underwriting agreement signed during the authority's monthly meeting, the issue will consist of serial bonds that will mature over the next 10 years. THE INTEREST rates on the bonds range from 4:75 percent on bonds that will mature within one year to 8 percent on bonds that will mature at the end of the tenyear period. The true interest cost of the total bond issue is 7.728 percent. This includes the fees earned and expenses incurred by the 93 underwriting firms involved in issuance and sale of the bonds as well as the interest paid to the bondholders. Primarily, as a result of the extremely favorable interest rates at time the bonds were sold, the authority was able to reduce the amount of bonds sold by nearly $2 million below what was originally projected without decreasing the amount of funds that will be available for transportation projects throughout the state.
