"This is a brand new clinic program," said Andrew Melchiorre, "which the American Lung Association has spent five years developing and testing across the county." In those tests, 80-90 percent of smokers who attended quit smoking during the clinc. "IN TESTING, 12 months after the end of the clinic, 30 percent of the participants had not smoked in the past month," said Melchiorre. One in five had not smoked at all since the end of the clinic. Almost all — 93 percent — of those who had not quit completely said they would try again. The clinic emphasizes unlearning a habit and does not involve scare tactics, said Melchiorre. Small group exchanges are a vital part of the program. "We even try to have fun. It's definitely not a torture rack." An orientation session to introduce smokers to the program will be held Feb. 11 at the County Health Department. Enrollment is limited, advance registration is required.
