Middle Seeks $85,000 Loan For H2O Lines
COURT HOUSE - Middle Township applied last week for a temporary loan of $85,000 at 5 percent interest from the state so work can begin on laying 2,200 feet of water main down Atlantic and Pacific avenues between Route 9 and the Parkway. That's how much the New Jersey Water Co. has estimated the job will cost. The area contains polluted underground water So does the west side of the Parkway, where a second stage of the work will involve laying another 2.200 feet of mains at equal cost The township plans to borrow that money, too Temporary financing. sought from the state Department of Environmental Protection, will allow work to get underway while the township floats a bond issue for permanent financing Both neighborhoods contain polluted wells The township has been furnishing water in drums to 19 residents ever since chemical solvents were discovered When the mains are installed — not before March 8 — homeowners may be
responsible for the estimated $300 to $400 cost of running connecting pipe from their homes to the curb line. Eventually, homeowners with contaminated water should be able to collect the cost of the water lines from the state Spill Compensation Fund But others connected, who turn out not to have contaminated water, could end up paying an assessment A Spill Fund spokesman said that whoever suffers pollution damages, whether a municipality, corporation or individual. can file a claim for reimbursement of costs incurred in obtaining an alternate water supply.
