Gansert's Running

SEA ISLE CITY - Commissioner J. Alan Ganscrl will seek re-election to the Board of Commissioners in the May 14th election. The Republican noted his record has been one of fiscal responsibility and active leadership in dealing with the affairs of the community and the Public Works Department. Budget reductions in 1982 and 1983 resulted in an average annual increase of only 3 percent over the past four years. The Water and Sewer Utility budget has been in the black throughout Gansert's term. Gansert also added the city's tax rate is fourth lowest in the county. "I am particularly pleas-

ed, having authored and secured passage of Ordinance #734," -Gansert said. Ordinance 734 resolved the problem of multifamily high-density development and also addressed the concerns of the business community. Gansert pointed out the hard work that was necessary to increase productivity and accountability in the Public Works Department. "We instituted personnel policies, evaluations, job descriptions and new training programs for department employees," a he stated. Gansert listed projects, $uch as the rehabilitation of the T.I. Water System

and the meter installation program, that were being accomplished within the department rather than by outside contractors, saving taxpayers $115,000 in added costs. There has been a systematic rehabilitation of recreation sites and a regular dune maintenance program, he added. The commissioner said he believes the need for continued fiscal responsibility, a new recreation complex and a revision of the remainder of the zoning ordinance in the near future will require tough decisions and the kinds of leadership he has exhibited in his first term. The voters of Sea Isle City will find my record in office a return on my promise to deliver effective leadership made in 1981 and 1 ask them to re-elect me for another term so I may continue to serve our fine community/' he ^continued. The commissioner has announced Bill Perry, Jr. as his campaign manager and Michael Thompson as his campaign Treasurer.

Task Force Focus On Young Drivers ,

COURT HOUSE - Of the 34 fatal accidents in which 42 persons were killed since 1979 in Middle Township, most involved alcohol, says Lt. William H. Hevcner, of the township polic.c department. Hevencr stressed the involvement of drinking in such mishaps as he took over as the new coordinator and director of the Cape May County Task Force on Drugs and Drunk Driving. He succeeds the initiator of the task force, newly- elected SherlTf James Plousis, who was an Ocean City patrolman when the group was formed. THE TASK force has spent much of Its time in efforts to make the public aware of the effects of drunken driving and the severe penalties for those' convicted of the offense. "It is easy to putjthc blame on any part of the community for the drunken driver/' Hevencr said, "You can blame the bar or restaurant where the person was drinking or the private party he attended. "You can blame the police that missed the vehicle and driver as they passed. You can blame the stater or whoever, for not making the punishement tougher. "WHAT YOU finally have to face Is that we must all make the average person renllie that he or she does not have the right to

get behind the wheel of a car after drinking. "All of us must make each other aware that we do not have the right to injure or kill someone just because wc have to get home. The really sod part about drunken driving Accidents is that statistical* ly, drunken drivers kill innocent, victims more often then they kill themselves." Middle Township and Lower Township high school students arc involved in the task force's activities. Other schools arc getting involved, too, in the effort to get through to the new driver, the student, . Hevcner said.
