50 Push-ups? g L To The Editor I am responding to Ed Rosenberg s Feb 6 letter. "Give Me 50." He is a candidate for the Republican nomination for Township Committee in this year's primary He has run for any office available, unsuccessfully, on both the Republican and Democrat tickets As mayor of this fine township. I cannot and will not sit back and let him lie to the media A good candidate gets ^ his facts and figures straight before he attempts to discredit government He reported that the Township I committee received a 10 percent pay raise and gave the "" "troops'' only 5 percent increase The truth is that all employes received a $1350 increase, from the highest paid to the lowest paid The Township Committee received the - same as the employes did A Rosenberg owes the newspaper "50 push ups for not tell ing the truth'' and also a public apology to the dedicated | township employes All are treated and compensated very well, ask them MICHAEL J VOLL Township of Middle

To The Editor The purpose of jdbrnalixm » to he the fact teller, one who reports the news, not the one who fabricates or makes parody The reporter should not assume the role of the demagogue If columnist Joe Zelntk believes his opinion scintillates in a humorous way. then place it in the funnies Is he not making a zoo out of journalism'1 His "A Zoo Without Elephants'**' which ran in the Opinion section of the Jan 10 issue is probably based on hts displeasure with the closed session If he is so displeased, then can't he say so and spare the reader the theatrics"? -c L too. do not like public exclusion, which may hinder my ' Elephants ' Perfect To TV Editor Just a quick note to tell you that I thought Joe Zelnik'x column A Zoo Without Elephants0" was wonderful I used to attend freeholder meetings, so am acquainted with many of the characters He had t V perfect touch for parady I' t^Ag(i»cned up my week / ^ JEAN rWCHtl I ' i / Ocean City
knowledge of the facts Can't the needs of the press be better represented than this0 His script has a contrived plot NEAR THE CMJRE of the last century, a ship called the ITS.S Maine blew and sank in a Cuban hay This was during growing tension with .Spain Randolph Hearst and other "Yellow Journalists" called it sabotage The stories provoked public opinion and forced President Cleveland to make a decision The decision led to the Spanish American War They also through contrived techniques such as parodies led us to war The press can be very powerful Upon further investigation, it was resolved that the explosion was internal, caused by human error and probably the fault of the U.S. These "Yellow Journalists" pricked national chauvinism and did not allow rational opinion to evolve ON A LEAS IMPORTANT vessel. Zelntk has embarked on a personal crusade based on seeming vindictiveness He acts as tV circe to credibility He tries to foment political discontent "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few " One must seek truth One cannot use opinion to he the sounding hoard of one s own suspicions That is not opinion That is accusation I do not doubt Zelnik's opinion but I do doubt his style GARROWW KERR JR North Wildwood FO NOTF.
