Right in the middle of the flu season we were hit last week with a severe case of BIG GAME fever You know (he signs Allofasud den more people want to come to school than you have room for. and a lot of media types want passes for their friends It's a little bit crazy, because lunchroom conversation among the staff includes memories of previous bouts with "the bug,*' while youngsters fidget and watch the clock an inordinate amount of time THERE IS no cure for the fever, and you khow you are facing a sizable dose when you are hosting a game between neighborhood rivals play ing for a conference title All you can do is enjoy the temporary madness and remember the time in your life when anything seemed to mean as much In the midst of all the ex cltement last week, as we prepared to play Wildwood for first place in the Tape Atlantic lvalue. around a "Big Game" you would have loved it' There were kids making posters and generally talking all around and ahout the game THE PLAYERS walked through the halls a little taller and generally smiled much more often They probably hadn't slept very well for a few nights, but which one of us wouldn't have longed for that kind of insomnia The excitement in an ticipation of the game was positively electric — and inescapable All afternoon the phone calls requested ticket information All morning we were busy preparing to accomodate an enthusiastic overflowcrowd WHEN VIEWED in the cosmic order of things, of course, who cares* We're not this excited ahout tm port ant issues like solving the world hunger problem or checking nuclear pro Itferatton. hut perhaps this is the real value of such a diversion For a few hours we can cheer our hearts out for our school and ride an emo tional roller coaster on the efforts of a few 17 year-old kids In a real sense the world stops for a few hours and everything is focused on 10 players on a 10 foot basketball floor As adults we all know that tomorrow will come and we will he hack at struggling with the hard stuff of reality, hut for the moment it's a genuine lift to he caught up In the excitement t ill ALLY THERE games are artistic and dramatic disappointments Our* wasn't It was not decided until there was literally no time left on the clock The noise level re quired you to shout com ments to the person next to you as the game huttt to tta climax with time running * out and the score getting rlnaer TV sun came up the next morning a Thursdav Wildwood had won The height of their joy and fhe depth Of our disappoint meat perfectly define the terrific excitement that the players . coaches and fans provided in with during our temporary cane of the fever "
