STONE HARBOR - Black ducks wintering in .Southern New Jersey and on Chincoteague Island. Va . are the object of a massive coastal search and study project by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Wildlife biologist HoJIi day Obrecht III will pre sent an overview of "Black Duck Winter Mortality Research in New Jersey and Virginia" 8 15 p m. Saturday, in the Mar shview Hall of the Wetlands Institute, east of Stone Harbor Obrecht s color slides will show areas of Brtgan tine Wildlife Refuge and Dennis Creek where the (harden State study is being done until March 15. as well as some pictures of the Chinoteague area
BEGINNING Dec 1. he and three assistants trapped and placed radio transmitters on 72 black ducks in New Jersey The team uses cars, boats, planes and even helicopters to trace duck activity These wildlife detectives find out what happens in the wintering area of this species and how they survive in hopes of eventually finding ways to aid the duck population The study team based in Ocean City, has found that the bird makes three choices when marshland is frozen solid It may go inland for open water and food, may go farther south to find warmer grounds, or may sit tight on the ice to conserve energy and await warmer weather
