Denis Must Move To Political Center To The Editor After President Reagan's landslide victory on Nov 6. 19B4. Sen Edward Kennedy, said of the Democratic organization, "if we don't change, we're going to basically let ourselves dissipate as a party " That is certainly a wide observation by the senator, and most ironic one It seems like only yesterday when the Kennedys of the 60's were echoing F.D.R.'s "New Deal" philosophy of spend now and worry later The Kennedy s arm-chair approach to solving social inadequacies by spending and more spending led to an economist nightmare and a politician's dream The sociologist applauded and the deficit grew The very people the liberals tned to help lost incentive and the all important ingnv client for achievement — pride in one self The one variable lacking in the liberal's equation for social reform was and always will be individualism DEMOCRATS DO AGREE on what must be done to turn things around Their image of representing special interest groups and solving problems by more government spending must cease Also, they must find a charismatic leader to carry their message The die-hard liberals, organized labor and New Deal traditionalist protest that moving the party towards a moderate stance would aban don principles that have guided Democrats for a halfcentury The blacks and women of that party also fear alienation Needless to say. the Democrats have their work cut out for them I am sure that by 1968, the Democrats will have, at least, on the surface come closer to the center of the political scale Someone like Sen Bill Bradley will be their guiding light. They will realize they have gone nowhere nationally by supporting splintered groups Some factions of their part will be hurt, but not lost They will swallow hard and rejoin the organzation After all where can they go? There are Umet when this job is a miserable and ugly um Thute times are par bculariy during conferences of despair These conferences are held in Uk principal t office and Uk persona* include a 14 or 17 yearokf disaf (acted student a harried and hassled parent or two. a guidance cuunselkif who has been through many prev tous meetings with both of them and the principal , who is looking for a quick cure for cancer If only if could be that simpk These conferences of failure always hurt and they are terminal AT THE EO( AL poult of the meeting is a youngster <boy or £iH > who dislikes school The reasons are usually deeply rooted in the psyche of the student and range from academic, to social to psychological to economic and back again If there once was defiance in the student it has been replaced by resolution or apathy or acceptance The parents come to the con (erence generally annoyed They feel victimized by everyone in attendance The youngster has been a disappointment and in most cases an unsettling incon venience The counsellor has not been abk to avoid this catastrophe and they feel that the school has fail ed in its responsiblity to their child IN A SENSE they are nght and both the counsellor and principal know it So we sit together and try to help the student understand the value of an education At this juncture we do not have a high success rate The background in every case is different, of course, but there are enough similarities in these youngsters to establish a pattern Usually it is a lack of academic success that starts the ball rolling Kids, like adults, hate to fail Whfcn failure begins parents are contacted After a while they stop respond «ng MANY TIMES their own lives are difficult enough to cope with without having to

come to vchwl to hear of Uk failure of their youngster and Us implication on their ruk a* parent < Teacher b often wonder why Uk parent* of kids in academic trouble don't cook to school on Back Ik school pight Think about an Soon, the youngster is old enough to act independent ly. and he or she starts to avoid school Academic and attendance difficulties in crease at a geometric rate and the circular pattern of despair seta in POOH GRADES produce poor attendance which pro duces poorer grades The parents frustration kvel is reached and contact with the school is avoided Teachers can't make a dent in the youngster s reluc lance, and they turn to the counsellor who is fighting a holding action By the time we get to the conference of despair there ts no belligerence left any where — only resignation Ml HE SIT in this office all of us having failed in our own way. and see a young ster who is facing a tough road in the future Unless there is a sizable inheri lance or there is a hidden well-spring of initiative and brilliance in the student, there will be more failure in the future What kind of job is there for a dropout9 How does he or she compete in the job market against students who have persisted and per formed9 How can a young ster with a track record of failure escape the vortex of disappointment and rejec tion as an adult CERTAINLY THERE are success stones among school misfits and there is always the chance that this is a very special youngster, but the odds are extremely long There is not much to say — nothing to save We are all responsible and victims at the same time Regard less of how many times you go through these confer ences. it is the waste of opportunity which hurts the most
