AVALON - Bishop George H Guilfoyle an oounced last week that Auxiliary Bishop* James L Schad. pastor of Marts Stella here, will become pastor of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Camden, effective March I Bishop Giuilfoy le announced further that Bishop Schad will also serve as Vicar (General in Curia According to Canon Law the task of the moderator of the curia is. under the authority of the diocesan bishop, "to coordinate the exercise of administrative responsibilities and to see to it that the other members of the curia duly fulfill the office entrusted to them " In this post. Bishop Schad will have charge of the admimstra twin of the diocesan offices IN MAKING the an nouncement of Bishop Schad's new responsibilities. Bishop Guilfoyle said "In my many years in Camden I have been blessed by the cooperation and friendship of an outstanding Auxiliary . Bishop and Vicar General In accepting his newest pastoral appointment. Bishop Schad has exemplified his great generosity, selflessness and concern for our people His remarkable ability and pastoral zeal will continue to help the Church here in South Jersey " Bishop Schad has been Auxiliary Bishop of Camden and Vicar General since Dec 8 1966 He has been pastor of Maris Stella. Avakin. since 1979 Prior to that he had been pastor at St Rose of Lima. Haddon Heights, Most Holy Redeemer. Westville Grove, and 51. Anne, Westville rorv in Philadelphia J# ly 20 1917. Bishop Schad was raised in Vine land and attended Catholic Schools there After seminary studies at Augustinian Academy. Stat en Island. N Y . St Charles College. < atonsville. MD. and St Mary's Seminary and
University, Baltimore, MD, he was ordained at the Cathedral of the Im maculate Conception April 10. 1943 After serving as assistant pastor of Holy Spirit. Atlantic City. Bishop Schad served as Army chaplain with the First Infantry Division in South Carolina and West Germany Upon his return he was assistant pastor of Christ the King. Haddonfield. until he was appointed pastor in Westville in 1954 BISHOP SCHAD has been a diocesan consultor since 1966 and is an ex of ficio member of the presbyteral council He has previously served as direc tor of Catholic Social Ser vices and director of the House of Charity In 1964 he— had been named a papal chamberlain with the title ••Reverend Monsignor.'* On two occasions Bishop Schad served as administrator of the Diocese of Camden Upon the death of Archbishop Damiano in October 1967. he was elected by the diocesan consultors to administrate the diocese until a new bishop was selected and installed He served briefly again as diocesan administrator in 1973 when Bishop Guilfoyle was in Rome for several months taking part in a program of theological education for bishops Sheets Takes Combat Course WILOW(X)D - Marine Pfc Joseph M Sheets, son of Marta and Ralph E Sheets Jr of 129 E Baker Ave . has completed the Infantry Training Course at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. ERMA - Julie Esher, a sixth grader at South Jersey Christian Academy, was recently named "Student of the Month' by the Lower Township Chamber of Commerce V Julie, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Wayne Esher of Court House, has been an SJCA student fof four years, and has been on the school's honor roll every marking period since she's been at the academy The sixth grader is a member of the school s Art Club, and participated recently in the Kids Teach Kids Art program at the Cape May County Art Lea gue She is editor of her class newspaper, and marks writing, reading, and draw ing as her hobbies SHE HAS also been a member of the school soccer learn. Bible Quiz Team, safety patrol, and has been SJCA's representative in various spelling bees, including the MACSA Re gional Bee SJCA Principal Charles Woods says it is a "real privilege to have Julie in our academy " He says that she "has a good sense of humor, a super attitude, and is very serious about applying her faith in everyday situations For being named the
