News Notes from The Wildwoods Thomas Parsons 729-5768
The President of the 9 Wildwood Crest PTC, Judy Davenport, would like the world to know that this active group is hosting its second annual talent show this month Slated for March 19 at 7 p m in the Crest Memorial Gym, the event promises to be most entertaining Every possible category of the performing arts will be seen and a few that you wont even recognize, so plan to attend If you are interested in participating, the only restrictions is "no live pets'" You may call either Judy - 522-8521. or Marilyn - 729-0028 if you have any need for further information • • •
ALSO IN the Crest, the Wildwood Crest Fire Department has a very special event scheduled for Sunday. April 28 a celebration of the "Crests" 75th anniversary and a dual housing at the fire company If you don t know- what a dual housing is. just stop by Holland's Texaco and ask Jack Holland, he is chairman of the celebra tion committee and without a doubt, will tell you more about housings and the Crest Fire Department than you imagined possible! For those of you unable to visit Jack, a housing is a dedication ceremony when a fire department houses" a newly purchas ed piece of equipment - in this case, two new fire vehicles The celebration and housing will begin 1 p.m. that Sunday and will include the official ceremony and a parade throughout the borough It is an excellent "kick-off" to the borough's year long anniversary celebration, and will be followed by a "post celebration and housing' festival with plenty to eat and drink The organizational committee for the event is: Jack Holland Jr.. chair man. Dave Cettei. Ed Cettei. Jim Davies. Dan Cooper. AJ Stokes, and Gary Stocker • • • A BRIEF explanation is due the many readers who inquired about the Mensa Scholarship mentioned in a past column Unfortunate ly. space restrictions precluded the publication of the item when it was submitted in December, and not realizing the time sen sitive nature of the release, it was published a month later when space permit ted Unfortunately, the application date had passed by the publication date Sorry for the confusion However. I have retained the names and addresses of all callers and as Mensa of fers scholarship com pet tions periodically throughout the year. I will make certain that each individual receives the information as it is received • • • REALTOR Joe Pierre, from H N Hand Realtors, mentioned the other day that a top grade Indian leather goods firm had obtamed a lease on the Wildwood Boardwalk It seems that the large firm owns processing plants in India and has other outlets throughout the world and
its addition to the Wildwood Boardwalk will be most welcome In related Boardwalk news, the plans to extend the Boardwalk up" Cedar Avenue and onto . Pacific Avenue is being greeted with applause When and if it will happen seens to be the question, but all agree that it is the Boardwalk in the summer that carries the economic impact, and any project that can "tap" this bonanza is sure to be supported by the Center City merchants • • • Congratulations are extended to Barbara and Jack Gallagher on the birth of their first child, a daughter. Feb 9. I had the
pleasure of meeting the new Ms Gallagher last weekend and can attest to her well behaved nature and "good looks" • • • BATTLE LINES seem to be drawn between Wildwood City Council and the Wildwood School Board over the maintenance of the Maxwell Field complex in Wildwood. and again, at the heart of a controversial issue is neighboring community use of a facility that happens to be located in Wildwood We hear it often concerning Wildwood Convention Hall Wildwood taxpayers indirectly support the facility by sacrificing park ing lot revenue rather than reducing local purpose taxes through their receipt With Maxwell Field, the city council wants the school board to budget for the facility's maintenance because students from each Island municipality use the facility for schoolsponsored and sanctioned activities Under the council's recommended plan, the school board would insert the budget item and through the formula of "sending district" fees. recoup a portion of the maintenance by increasing the fees the other com mumties pay to Wildwood for students attending the high school WILDWOOD S Mayor Victor DiSylvenster implied that the voters should reject the budget if the maintenance clause is not inserted If the budget is rejected by the voters. City Council, then bears the burden of rewriting it and resubmission for revote With only a third of the School Board members in attendance at the meeting with council, a decision was impossible to reach, although the board indicated that it may be too late to address the issue this year While all of the discussion goes on concerning the Maxwell Field Complex, many students are grateful for the continuing efforts of the Greater Wildwood Jaycees. who have an ongoing program of events designed to generate revenues to upgrade and maintain the sports field and its various buildings, which is all the more reason to attend the Jaycees funtime basketball game 7 30 pm Friday in the Wildwood Gym This enjoyable evening will feature the Greater Wildwood All Stars playing against the Philadelphia Eagles Plan to attend
