350 Summer Jobs For Disadvantaged

ERMA — The county's Private Industry Council (PIC) has federal funds to give minimum wage summer jobs to about . 350

economically disadvantaged youths aged 14-21 All it needs is the kids. The agency also is looking for employers — private-

nonprofit or public agencies that can use free help — but they're never in short supply. Potential employers

should contact the PIC at 886-6312 or 886-4757. Youths can get applications from local high schools, the vo-tech school, the state Employment Service office in Wildwood, or from PIC which is located at the county airport LAST YEAR'S employers mostly municipalities, county government, libraries — requested more youth than PIC could supply. That could be because better-than-minimum-wage jobs abound in the county during the tourist season. President Reagan, incidentally, is asking for a $2.50-an-hour minimum wage for unskilled young people under 20 for the period May 1-Sept. 30. Congress is not expected to go for it. To qualify for this Summer Youth Employment Program, administered under the Job Training Partnership Act, youths must meet low family in- , come standards. For a family of four, for example, maximum income of $11,900 is allowed. NAN MAVROMATES. county PIC administrator, said the county should get about 34 percent of a $1.2-million federal appropriation to the Atlantic-Cape May PIC. That's about the same as last year, she said. The youths will work 30 to 35 hours a week for the nineweek period June 21-Aug. 22. In 1983, the program had 400 youths apply and was able to match only 300 to jobs Last year, however, the program got a late start and applications dropped to 250 Last year was the first year the Employment Serv ice handled eligibility and some officials felt it was part of the recruitment problem. The Employment Service is doing it again this year. Mavromates said, but "they've had much more experience and will put on additional help this year."'
