The Middle Township High School Marching Band Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Richard P. Ludwig, won first place in the second round of the Advance Regional Percussion Ensemble Competition in Lakewood March 23. The school's 23-member ensemble also won first place during round one of the competition, held in Edison Feb. 15. Schools from Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and New Jersey competed. THE ENSEMBLE played a variety of marching and, concert percussion instruments in a five-minute, two-number performance during both competitions. Dane DuFour is the ensemble's arranger and instructor. The school's band has a long history of success in local and state competitions. About 85 percent of the school's musicians are honor students. The school's stage band and percussion ensemble also performed at the Woodbine State School March 29 during Music Appreciation Week. ELEMENTARY School 3 nurse Kathleen Brown and guidance counselor Christine Gavula presented the film "Now I Can Tell You My Secret" to the school's fourth and fifth grade students. The film taught the children about child and sexual abuse and how to inform another person if an individual was a victim of this crime. It also showed how the "support system" operated in the child's home and community. Brown and Gavula discussed the film's content and answered the students' questions after the presentation. They discussed how the children should have a family code word when someone other than the child's parents arrives to drive one of them home. Parents were offered a preview of the film prior to its classroom presentation. • • • MIDDLE TOWNSHIP School's Chess Team was one of four teams which tied for first place out of 20 that competed in their division at the United States Amateur Chess Team Championship recently at the Hilton Hotel in Somerset.
