VFW, Dellas Take Hockey Crowns
CAPE MAY -The junior find senior divisions of the city street hockey league held their championship games this past week. The junior division played one game for the championship while the seniors had a best of three playoff. In the junior game. V.F.W Post 386 won the championship as it played an outstanding game to defeat the Cape May Fire Company 4-0. The victors were led by Matt Notch, who scored 2 goals, and Derek Warner and Butch Rosen, who had a goal apiece. THE CAPE MAY Fire Co won the regular season with a 7-1-2 record. Team members include Joe Rozanski, Doug Stott. Steve Coon, m Scott Dille. Steve Seggern. Ken Bender. Mike Brimgham and Scott Quachenbush. The V.F.W. Post 386 team had a 6-2-1 record going into the playoffs and played outstanding during the playoffs. Team members include Bill Mulligan, who led the league in scoring: Notch. Ron Deems. Matt Deems. Lee Pierce. Warner, Tim Dougherty, and Rosen. DELLAS STORES and Axelsson & Johnson squared off in the best of three Senior Championship series with Delias prevailing two games to one. Axelsson & Johnson won the first game 5-4 while Delias came back to win the final two 5-1 and 5-3. Axelsson & Johnson were led by the DeComillo brothers, who played great hockey during the entire series. John DeComillo had 2 goals, while Mark had 1 goal Steve Watson had a lone goal along with Charles Temple. Delias was led in the first game by Jim Cavanaugh. who played a fine game and scored 3 goals Jim Hawthorne. who led the league in scoring, chipped in with a goal The duo of Hawthorne and Cavanaugh again led Delias in the second game with 3 goals each. AXELSSON AND Johnson's leading scorer.
Charles Temple, scored the lone goal for his team. The third and deciding game was the finest played game of the year as both teams displayed outstanding hustle and desire to win the championship. Delias prevailed in the end, led by Hawthorne and Cavanaugh as it has been all year. Hawthorne scored 4 goals for the winners while Cavanaugh scored a single goal. Axelsson & Johnson got a superb effort out of John DeComillo, who scored all three of his team's goals. Goal tenders John Figueras of Axelsson & Johnson and John Tice of Delias Stores both played extremely well during the playoffs. Axelsson & Johnson finshed the regular season with a 6-4 record. Team members include Mark DeComillo. John DeComillo, Frank Surron. Watson, Paul Vicencio, George McFeat, Ed Murphy. Temple and Figueras Delias Stores won the regular season with a 7-3 record and has played consistently well all year Team members are Owen Miller. Hawthorne. Mark Douglass, Vince Grencovich, Tice. David Farina. Chuck Hawley. Ed Garvin. Eric Flickinger and Cavanaugh.
Cheers End In Party For Victors VILLAS - St. Raymond's School cheerleaders, who won first and second place honors in county competition held recently at Wildwood High School, were treated to a party by their parents at the Wildwood Fire Hall after the contest The varsity girls, led by i Jennifer Rich, captain took first place for the fourth consecutive year. The varsity squad is coached by Mrs. Roseanne Holt, Mrs. Nancy Lang, and Robert a Trimarco. A trophy for second place was awarded St. Raymond's petition, this newly formed squad of 3rd and 4th graders is led by Jaime Keith as captain. Mrs. Barbara Fiore and Janice Phillips coached the girls. Miss Junior Cheerleader was awarded to 4th grade student Jill Poserina, who was judged on her own individual cheer. The varsity girls also participated in competition at Sacred Heart High School in Vineland March 17. Among 14 other squads, St. Raymond's placed third in the pom-pom dance routine
Soccer Clinic Set for July
CAPE MAY - The city will sponsor a one-week soccer clinic Monday, July 8. through Friday, July 12, at the Lower Cape May Regional High School each day from 9 a m to 3 p.m. Skip Roderick, a former coach and player with the Philadelphia Fever soccer team, will be the head instructor. Greater Cape May area youngsters between the ages of 6 and 16 can benefit from the experience Each participant will receive a T-shirt and a soccer ball. Additionally, an assortment of prizes and trophies can be earned during competitions
throughout the week. Pre registration is required. Youngsters can register at Cape May Convention Hall Monday through Friday 8:30-4:30. For additional information, call the Department of Civic Affairs at 884-8411, ext. 20 or 27.
