The mark by Mark Mattem Three Coaches Exit After Winning Seasons
Local high school coaches seem to be following a similar pattern. In Uk last couple of weeks, three head coaches have given up their posts and all have gone out on a winning note. First Ocean City football coach Ed Woolley resigned after winning the South Jersey Title, now two other head mentors have left division winners. At Ocean City, Woolley's position didn't even get cold before a replacement was named. Tony Galante got . the job. GALANTE HAS BEEN an assistant coach in both the football and wrestling programs for the past six years. The 27-year-old went through the Ocean City High , School system and is a graduate of Ursinus College. Galante teaches physical education and driver education. The new head man sees his appointment as a dream come true, but the dream of another South Jersey Title will be hard to realize as Ocean City will be hit hard by graduation FOR THE PAST MONTH girls basketball has been the talk of the County from Ocean City to Middle Township. The two teams that caused such an uproar are the
only two teams that don't have head coaches right now. Last week, both Bill Penman at Middle and Pat Dougherty of Ocean City resigned. Family and personal reasons caused Penman to give up his chalkboard after nine seasons at the helm for the Panthers. Penman says he decided late last year that the 84-85 campaign would be his last. In his Final year. Penman led Middle Township to the Cape Atlantic League II Title, the South Jersey Title and a spot in the state championship title. Penman's club recorded 25 wins in a row before falling in the state final. PENMAN EXISTS with a 166-6 overall record at Middle Township. In his nine seasons, his club won two South Jersey titles, one league title and won 20 games or more five times. Coach Penman has recommended long-time assistant Gary Barber for the job of guiding the Panthers, and he has not ruled out the possibility of returning to coaching in the future. Pat Dougherty has been on the Ocean City girls' bench for the past 15 years. Now's the time for her to take a little time for herself. Dougherty stepped down
following a Cape Atlantic League I division winning season. The Raiders needed a playoff win over Cumberland to earn the title. AT ONE POINT. (1971-79) Dougherty's teams won eight consecutive league crowns. Those titles were in the old CAL. Ocean City qualified for post-season play every year that Dougherty was at the helm. She finishes with a 269-65 career record. Dougherty will continue to teach in Ocean City with no plans of moving out of the area.
Dougherty 's assistant - coach for the last nine years, Sandy Corson, also stepped aside, creating two vacancies. REMARKS: I guess I can't put this off anymore. Here are my predictions for the baseball season that gets under way early next week. First of all, the World Champs are not going to win the American East. That honor will be decided between the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees. The Orioles helped them-
selves during the off-season by picking up Fred Lynn. Now pitchers can not pitch around Eddie Murray. The Yankees can make a run if their pitching holds up I'll take the Orioles. In the American West I like the Minnesota Twins. I think it's about time all those "cheap kids" start to payoff. Kent Hrbek and Company should fare well in an average division. CAN THE PHILLIES win the National League East. I think they can IF they can go a couple of games without a major injury. The top
of the order will give them enough runs, but aging arms and a slumping Al Holland need to play big. Anyway I'm not picking the Phils I'll put my money on the New York Mets and not because of Gary Carter. They have the Pitching, and Pitching and Pitching. Forget the Chicago Cute, they had their chance. The National League West will once again be the division of 500 teams Whoever can lose the least will win the flag. I'm taking Atlanta because of Bruce Sutter.
Breakwater Keeps Title in Squeaker
COURT HOUSE Breakwater Electric, in a hard-fought series reminiscent of its 1984 victory, retained the Middle Township Recreation Department's Men's Volleyball crown in a match against Twiggs' Painters. Breakwater, down two games to zero in the best of five series, fought back to win the title in one of the most exciting matches this year. Twiggs' moved out to a win in game one behind the powerful spikes of Jim McKinley and Scott Hiller. Game two was virtually a carbon copy of the first game with the final outcome showing an identical score of 15-13 favoring Twiggs'. This game was paced by the net play of Dave Matagiese and Gary Twiggs and the spiking of Ernie Troiano and Tom Beheler for Breakwater. IN GAME THREE. Breakwater came out determined to make it a fight. Using the sets of John Wilsey, Ernie Troiano and Bill Bezaire, Breakwater won easily 15-4. Game four showed a repeat of the grueling night's action as Breakwater won 16-14. This game was paced by the
serves of Rick Ferrante and Herb Hudson. At the net. Terry Brown played a tight game with his accurate serves. In the fifth game, Ferrante and Hudson again paced Breakwater with their accurate serves. Twiggs and George Burgess kept Twiggs' in the game with their saving dives and sets. Tim McKinley and Hiller put on a display of spiking, but the effort was too late. Team members for Breakwater included Bill Bezaire. Brown, Hudson. John Wilsey, Ferrante, Beheler, Jerry Griffin and Troiano. Twiggs' was represented by Twiggs, Jim and Tim McKinley, Matagiese, Burgass, and Hiller.
