Doris Ward REMINDER — Avalon officials met with Realtors last December to discuss "detrimental situations" and agreed to start on April 1 enforcing an ordinance which limits real estate signs to one per property. April 1 came and went, this week. The signs (this photo was taken at 64th and 3rd streets) didn't. Mayor Rachel Sloan said "reminders" will be sent to Realtors.
Raff a Plans a Run For Seventh Term
SEA ISLE CITY - Mayor Dominic C. Raffa has announced he will seek reelection to a seventh term on the local city commission. Raffa, who has served the past 12 years as mayor, was first elected to the board in 1961. He has been active in public life in the community in which he was born for the past 40 years. Well known in Trenton, he has had a close working relationship with the past five New Jersey governors, dating back 32 years, when he first met Governor Robert B. Meyner. SINCE THAT time, he has maintained close liaison with Governors Richard J. Hughes, William T. Cahill, Brendan T. Byrne and Thomas H. Kean. Mayor Raffa is an aide in the State Legislature, handling posting of bills. He is also chairman of the Legislative Affairs Committee of the New Jersey Travel and Resort Association and is on the Legislative Committee of the Southern New Jersey Development Council. Locally, he was named "Man of the Year" by the Madonna Maria Council, Knights of Columbus, several years ago and has been President of the Italian American Club and Commander of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. RAFFA IS Republican City Leader, a post he has held for the past two years with the Cape May County Republican Organization. He is a past president and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Sea Isle City Rotary Club). During his tenure in office, he has spearheaded efforts to build two water towers, provide sewer service for the entire area south of 65th Street in Townsend's Inlet and obtained millions of dollars for beach protection and inlet dredging. One of his main accomplishments occurred last year when the city received its largest single grant, $3.1 million for beach replenishment. Another million in federal and state grants were forthcoming after the coastal storm of last March 29, 1964. RAFFA HAS also been responsible for vast improvements at Dealy Field, the city's 50-acre recreation complex along Central Avenue at 59th Street.
Over his 24 years in office, he has helped get the jetties along the oceanfront as part of the state's Master Plan for Shore Protection. Raffa was first elected to the city commission in 1961 and every four years thereafter: He is a native of Sea Isle City, born in 1918. His father, Paolo, died 52 years ago in a fishing accident off the coast. His mother, Natina, who resided in the Raffa home at 135 42nd St., died at 93 in 1978. Raffa was one of nine children. Four brothers, Bruno, John, Andrew and Anthony, and two sisters, Jean and Frances, are still alive. Paul and Mary died several years ago. Raffa and his wife, Louise, have four children, Paul, 38, Eugene, 34, Donna Schirmuhly, 30, and Louise Claire, 20, and one grandchild, Tina Marie Schirmuhly
Crewman Assisted
CAPE MAY - A helicopter from Air Station Cape May hoisted and transported an injured fisherman to a Lewes, DE Hospital last Wednesday. About 3 p.m.. Group Cape May received a radio call from the fishing vessel Lady Helen, 35 nautical miles east of Ocean City, MD, which had a crewman who was in need of medical attention. The station launched a helicopter which arrived on the scene at 4:20 p.m. The injured crewman, Forrest Williams. 20, from New Bern, NC, sustained head injuries while fishing. He was taken from the 87-foot clammer, with a crew of four out of Marathon, FL, and flown to Beebe Memorial Hospital, Lewes, where he is being treated. The helicopter, piloted by Lt. J.G Steve Mehling, and
co-pilot, LCDR Tom King, with air crewmen Petty Officers R. Vaughan and Jr Rea, arrived at the hospital at about 5 p.m. Coalition Plans National March COURT HOUSE - The Jersey Cape Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament will discuss the April 20 national march and rally in Washington, D.C. at the group's meeting on April 9. A bus from Cape May and Atlantic counties will carry people to the rally. Plans for an art auction and planting a peace garden also will be discussed. The coalition meets in the public room of the Cape May County Library in Cape May Court House at 7:45 p.m.
Run Slated For Point CAPE MAY POINT - The Five Mile Run Committee will soon begin solicitation for sponsors for the seventh annual run, to be held Saturday, June 15. The event is the prime fund-raiser for the local fire company, and is a major community endeavor. Chris Garrison, chairman, announced that this year funds will be used to continue restoration of the fire house A two-mile fun run will be held 9 a.m. June 15. followed by the five-mile run at 9:30 a.m. Anyone interested in helping with race plans is asked to contact the director for information.
