From The Principal By Stanley Kotzen Principal, Lower Cape May Regional High School
They were wearing their little "red badges of giving" Tuesday. March 19. as the American Red Cross brought its travelling show to our gymnasium and left with 111 pints of our blood. Twice a year we go through this very special experience which as in no other case allows us to see and feel the sense of family that exists in a modern high school. It is the most democratizing event that we provide all year. All barriers and distinctions are down. Those walls between student, teacher, secretary, custodian, and administrator evaporate as we all like down and drip life into little plastic bags THE ONLY distinctions that exist here during the blood drive are those of age and inclination (Students must be 17 in order to give with parent permission).
Linda Merlino, a social studies teacher and advisor to our student council, heads up the project, aided by a staff of committed and effective student volunteers. . This is the ninth year that she has directed our school blood drives and in this semi-annual effort we at Lower Cape May Regional have contributed well over 1800 pints of blood during that time. The fact that our school leads the county in contributions is a genuine source of pride for all of us, and it is especially comforting to hear the plaudits that our staff and students receive from The Red Cross when these visitors leave our school on their rounds of gathering the gift of life. THE BLOOD DRIVE be gins with several weeks of planning and encouraging students and staff to sign up
for a donation. In terms of key donors. The Red Cross is most enthusiastic about young people who can give blood comfortably and start at age 17 When the chapter has successful donors at this age. it has established life-long donors who will continue to . contribute to blood drives in their work or community associations in the future (High school blood drives contribute more than 10 per cent of the region's 350,000 pint quota annually) Once the sign up is completed. student volunteers assign donation times and contact donors with passes to come to the gym where the drive is held. Our gym then takes on the look of a combination human horizontal parking lot, a large bus station waiting room, and the lunch counter at your local diner. IT'S EXHILARATING to see the sense of accomplishment and comraderie shared by the donors, who wear their badges proudly as they chat amiably over a post-donation repast of pretzels, iced tea, orange juice, coffee and doughnuts (I can remember my first , pint clearly and how good I felt about being a member of this very special club. ) The nicest aftermath of the blood drive, though, is seeing people from all areas of our school community, students and staff literally lying side by side giving the most precious gift they have in a common cause. This is sharing in its purest form. According to the Red Cross, Cape May County is nearing its quota of 4,020 pints for this year. The high school blood drives have been a vital part of the county program, and we are very proud of the role we have played in providing the opportunity for our school family to contribute to such a worthy enterprise.
Rx Health Watch by Dr Robert C Beitman
Our new series of articles will be on bone loss in women. Many consider the incidence of fractured hips in the elderly to be of epidemic proportions. One physician recently told me that he recommends older women of unstable gait enter nursing homes rather than live alone, "not so they won't break their hip. but so that when they do they will be found promptly." While his position is a dramatic one, it does emphasize the great likelihood of a broken hip for women in their later years. The broken hips are bad enough, but the stress of surgery and risks of surgery in older adults too often take their toll on quality of health and survival. Of the 200,000 women with broken bones from "osteoporosis," (gradual weakening of the bones that comes with age), 40,000 are reported to develop complications such as blood clots and pneumonia and die within a year. Many others will spend the rest of their lives painfully disabled. WITH SUCH depressing, frightening statistics in view, Health Watch Readers can be better prepared to follow health habits that have been found to reduce the likelihood of severe osteoporosis There are risk factors in addition to being female. You are a prime candidate if you have the following: Skin pigmentation has been found to be associated with the risk of osteoporosis. White women are at greater risk than black women and the fairer the white woman's complexion the greater the risk. Sun tanning does not have a protective effect; the risk is associated with natural complexion. Aging specialists have noted that women with ancestors from northern Europe and the British Isles statistically seem at greater risk than those from African, Hispanic or Mediterranean ancestries. IF AN IMMEDIATE female relative has had
osteoporosis, so eventually may you. (your grandmother. mother , aunt or sister. ) Older persons with this problem look as if they have shrunk over the years. They often have a hunched back or curved appearance and complain of chronic back aches. This is because the bones in the spinal column have softened and collapsed forward. "Small boned," petite women have less bone to lose and may be at . greater risk. The age of "the change of life," the menopause, has been found to be key. A woman's body produces less of the hormone estrogen after menopause. One of the functions of estrogen is to help keep bone strength. Thus the earlier your menopause. the less time you've had with a full component of estrogen to support your bones. Next week we'll cover the most up to date approaches available for prevention of osteoporosis. Healtfx Watch is a public education project of the Cape May County Unit of the New Jersey Division of the American Cancer Society, of which Dr. Beit man is president-elect.
