Bill Aims To Close Dumpsite

WASHINGTON. D C - Congressman Bill Hughes (D-NJ) has drafted new legislation which is aimed at permanently closing the 12-mile dumpsite off the coast of New Jersey — the only area in the United States where the ocean dumping of municipal wastes continues "Last year alone, more than eight million tons of . sewage sludge were dumped in the ocean off the New Jersey coast , " Hughes said "This ocean dumping is ruining our coastal waters, threatening our fishery resources, and poses great risks to public health and safety It's time to bnng this harmful practice of ocean dumping to an end, once and for all " IN ADDITION to per manently closing the 12-mile site, which is known as the New York Bight.
