Rx Health Watch by Dr Robert G. Beitman
Factors which reduce the likelihood of osteoporosis (a gradual weakening of the bones that comes with age ) is our topic this week Cer tainly calcium is the best known agent But are you aware that without Vitamin D your body cannot absorb and use the calcium to strengthen your bones? The best way to get vitamin D is to be sure to get outside For at least 10 minutes each day. Sunshine and drinking milk fortified with Vitamin D are the best routes of obtaining the vitamin. Unfor tunately many older adults find that they have trouble digesting milk, thus cutting - off an important source of
both calcium and vitamin D. IN SUCH cases a vitamin supplement not to exceed 400 I.U. can be taken. More is not better in taking Vitamin D supplements, as it will interfere with bone development if taken in excessive quantities. Check your vitamin bottles to make sure you are not exceeding this dose. Healthy women between the ages of 35 and 50 need 1,000 milligrams of calcium daily, those over 50 need at least 1,200 mg. a day Milk and cheeses are your best sources, at least the equivalent of one quart a milk a day IT IS TRUE that some grains and vegetables contain calcium. Regrettably they also contain substances which block the body's ability to use the calcium in that form. Calcium tablets are good for people who can't tolerate milk producLs The best ones have 'calcium carbonate" as the active ingredient It is true that Turns antacid tablets are another source of this substance. Avoid "bone robbers " These include lack of exer cise, smoking, coffee, foods with phosphorus additives like soft drinks (check la bels), excessive alcohol consumption, diets too high in protein. Vitamin A and D. PROLONGED USE of an tacids containing aluminum. diuretics, thyroid supplements and certain types of steroids can also lead to bone loss. If you are taking these you will want to take steps to compensate through improved diet, exercise, and when possible, reduction and eventual elimination of the offending drug. One of the few advantages of being overweight is that weight puts stress on your bones, which strengthens them Also, obese women produce more estrogen, a hormone which has been linked to positive bone development There is extensive controversy over the advantages of taking estrogen after menopause ONE ADVANTAGE is that it helps prevent calcium loss However, tak ing estrogen requires close monitoring to check for the development of cancer There are many positive and negative side effects to estrogen administration, and such a decision should come after a serious discussion with your physician Finally, it is essential that you-have an extra good intake calcium and vitamin D while are pregnant and during nursing It is believed that both the fetus and the infant will draw on your calcium, vitamin and mineral reserves and unless you replace them daily, your body will develop deficits in these substances Health Watch is a public education project of the American Cancer Society.
