At Shore Memorial Hospital, Alcoholism is a Treatable Disease, Not a Disgrace
The American Medical Association certified alcoholism as a disease- in 1956. But nearly 30 years later, many people still consider it a character weakness— or worse, something shameful. The only thing shameful about alcoholism is the stigma many attach to it. A stigma often shared by the alcoholic. "For the alcoholic person or family member to receive appropriate treatment, they must first learn and believe that alcoholism is a disease." comments Linda Naughton,
Director of Alcoholism Services at Shore Memorial Hospital. "What's more, it's a treatable disease with recognizable symptoms. As such its identification and treatment belong in the hospital." Shore Memorial Hospital provides a medical detoxification program for alcoholics, many of whom suffer from diseases of the pancreas, the gastro-intestinal tract and others. An important part of the program is counseling, to help the alcoholic overcome his or her denial and begin the journey to recovery Treatment plans are individualized. Discharge planning may include further treatment at alcoholism rehabilitation centers, individual counseling
Alcoholics Anonymous, which meets regularly at the hospital. Because alcoholism is a family disease, counseling also embraces the alcoholic's family. Alcoholism is the largest killer after heart disease and cancer SMH's alcoholism services are one more example of how your community hospital cares for the people of South Jersey.
