Eleanor Hand was honored on her 80th Birthday at the April 2nd meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 198. She is a long time member and past presiden tof the auxiliary. Hand is currently employed through the "green thumb" program and works in the township building inspector's office. She is assisting township officials in their efforts to complete the new house renumbering system, which will be implemented later this year. Hand is also still an active member in the Legion's Auxiliary. A belated "Happy Birthday" to her. A VERY LOW voter turnout was reported in the local school board election April 2. The three incumbents were returned to office in the uncontested election. John I.. O'Dea received 179 votes, James G Allax 176, and Mary Norbury 175. The school budget was passed 134 to 64. Middle Township High School students participating in this year's New Jersey Science League competition are looking forward to their last examination later this month. THE STUDENTS continued their outstanding performance in the league's third round of exams last month. The ninth grade biology students have improved on each test and have moved into a tie for sixth place in the state. The physics team is in seventh place after the March exam and is preparing to regain its top four standing The top four teams in each of the five science categories in the state will receive plaques at an awards banquet. THE TWO HIGHEST scoring students in each of the five categories are: Margaret Hseih and Christine Heck in Biology: Scott Smith and Bill Balliette in Physics; Rob Dean and Ed Webb in Chemistry 1; John Francis and Bill Eckstein in Chemistry 2. Kristin Brady and Chris Maurer in Biology 2. The 1985 Boy Baysea Power Dinner for the Boy Scouts of America Southern New Jersey Council will be held 6:30p.m May 15 at the Top of the Marq Restaurant in Cape May The guest speaker will be former Flyers' Stanley Cup defenseman Joseph Watson. DEBBIE DODSON'S second grade class at Elementary 1 dyed Eftster eggs April 3 and donated them to the residents at the South Cape Nursing Home. The parents donated the eggs and materials while the youngsters supplied the artistic talent if Vanessa Heck. Kathy Richardson,, and Bridget O'Connor. who have children in Dodson's class. assisted the students with, their project Red Cross Youth Services Chairperson Nancy Vecere
delivered the eggs to the nursing home. American Legion Post 198 will hold a pancake breakfast at the post home, Hand Avenue and Dias Creek Road. The Middle Township Democratic Organization will hold its annual dinner at the Wildwood Golf and Country Club April 26, with Dutch treat cocktails at 6:30 p.m. A full course dinner will be served 7:30 p.m. The guest speaker is Congressman William Hughes. THE 8TH ANNUAL All South Jersey Junior High Band Concert was held March 17 in the Wilson Concert Hall at Glassboro State College. Middle Township Middle School was fortunate to, have 13 of its student musicians performing in the concert. The musicians names and instruments are: Heather Bahnivic. oboe: Cathy Wang, clarinet; Nicole Cinowski, alto saxophone; Misty Hansen, trumpet, Amy Brown, flute; Art Sunhachawee. clarinet: Scott Bluth. alto saxophone ; Sherry K. Croitor. trumpet ; Nicole Bove. French horn; Lisa English, trombone. Melody Hoffman, trombone; Vicki Heun. baritone, and Robert Tyndall. tuba. Richard Sterling is the school's band director and has been chosen All County Band Chairperson for the last three years He has also participated in judging the All South Jersey Band audilions for the last four years Sterling and Leonard G. Nicolas of Lenape High School in Medford were the concert's conductors ATTENTION. ALL Mid die Township Volunteer groups! Don't forget that pictures will be taken for the municipal calendar's "salute to volunteers" in the court room at Township Hall 7:30 p.m. April 15. For more information call Norm Lochten at 465-4586 Middle Township High 5 School Key Club members donated and served refreshments while Court House Kiwanians assisted the athletes in the third annual Cape May County Special Olympics Swim Meet at the Coast Guard Base in Cape May March 30. Kiwanians performed various functions from acting as timers for the various events to hugging the athletes They also agisted the athletes in the coast water, ping pong and inner tube races. The athletes were able to perform in the swimming events with very little assistance. Ocean Atlantic Textile Screening owner Jerry Klaus donated 185 T-shirts to all athletes and volunteers. The shirts will also be worn in the Special Olympics Track Meet May 4.
A SOFT PRETZEL sale was held every Friday during March at Elementary School 3. All proceeds were donated to the Statue of Liberty Restoration Program. The PTA sponsored this fundraiser. Middle Township Middle School's team won the first place trophy in the fourth annual '"Think Day" contest sponsored by the National Honor Society. George Brock was the advisor to this event held at Ocean City High School March 30. The competition consists of questions from all academic areas in addition to sports trivia. It is divided into three rounds. The Honor - Society students make up the questions. The Middle School's winning team members are John Radzieta. captain; Barry Dickinson; Donna Buonanni; Cathy Wang; and Lance Ludman. Ed Cohen was the alternate member. We congratulate these talented students on their victory. Teachers Ellen Lomax and Lee Sullivan acted as advisor and judge respectively. THE SPRING Sports Season began April 1 at Middle Township High School, according to instructor Phil Exley. The students have been practicing for the season's sporting events since March 8. Softball, baseball, boys' track, girls' track, and boys' tennis will be played during the season. All Middle Township business owners are warned it is illegal to display "attention getting devices" such as banners and flags according to Ordinance No. 236-69. Article XVIII. OVER 100 Kiwanians, in-cluding-24 from the Court House Kiwanis Club, attended the Division One Kiwanis Dinner held at the Linwood Golf and Country Club March 28 Mayor Mike Voll recently appointed Middle Township Key Club member Ed Webb Jr. and NAACP Youth Division member JoAnn Hines Vjo the 25-member Mayor's Advisory Council. The two new members will represent the township's "junior citizens" on the council, and it is hoped, provide the input of the needs of the adolescents in the township, according to Voll. Both new members are seniors at Middle Township High School. Webb is from Court House and Hines from Whites boro. Middle Township has received a $1,035 highway safety project grant from the State Division of Motor Vehicles. The township will use the grant for managing the Driving While Intoxicated Enforcement Program. • • • THE HIGH SCHOOL Marching Band's Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Richard P. Ludwig played a variety of marching and concert percussion instruments in a five-minute performance during the second round of this year's regional music competition in Lakewood March 23. The school's 23-member percussion ensemble won first place with an overall score of 76 dwing the first competition held in Edison Feb. 15.
