APRIL SHOWERS bring May flowers ... a spring rain can bring magical results in our gardens. It nourishes what we have planted — and when those plants grow they nourish us. Spring rain is a necessary part of unloosening Nature's forces. A bouquet of flowers on the dining room table always tells the season outdoors. Some forsythia, a few pussy willows, a bunch of daffodils ... well, they spell springtime to us. In the springtime we use pale yellow tablecloths or delicate pinks, sometimes covered with an ivory lace cloth. Gives dignity to even a simple meal. Did you know the forsythia is a native of China, Japan, and southeastern Europe? This lovely shrub was named in honor of William Forsyth, who was director of the Royal Gardens at Kensington. England, during our War for Independence. FOR THE ANCIENT Romans April was sacred to Venus, their goddess of love. Love and springtime are an unbeatable combination. A walk through the Cape May County Park on a lovely spring day with someone you love is a delicious way to enjoy the new season A walk along the beach is another good way to enjoy springtime. Been out there lately? Now that spring is here, we like to go stepping out more than ever Here are some of the places we've been stepping out to: CAT'S MEOW. Mr Vince is the proprietor of the Cat's Meow at 68th Street and Ocean Drive. Avalon — and he gets the biggest kick out of seeing his customers enjoy the seafood, chicken and veal platters he offers Choices include fried shrimp, breast of chicken filet, fried flounder and scallops, deviled clams and veal parmesan. When we saw nut breaded shrimp listed on the menu we just had to try it - it suited our taste perfectly Mr Vince offers a large variety of take-out. including fresh flounder, lobster tail, jum bo crab claw fingers and cooked shrimp Give him a call at 368 5015 and your take-out will be waiting when you get there WINDRIFT. Ah. when the wind is drifting, we love to drift over, to where else but the Windrift Restaurant and Lounge, at 80th and the Beach in Avalon. It's a good place to soothe away the cares of the day and/or enjoy an evening out

Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the choices are more than ample. Dinner choices include roast prime ribs of beef, veal cutlet, broiled lamb chops (perfect in the springtime), seafood en brochette, and shrimp scampi. Music with D.J. Ted Steinmetz Friday and Saturday nights. MAD BATTER. While the name Mad Batter sounds like somebody out of Alice in Wonderland, the only thing maddening for us at the Mad Batter is we have trouble making up our mind what to order. This highly acclaimed gourmet restaurant located at the Carroll Villa Hotel at 19 Jackson Street, Cape Maywas among the first to give the old town an outstanding dining reputation. Every Monday. Tuesday and Thursday. International Nights are featured. Complete dinners of exotic and unusual cuisine from a different country are served for a $15.00 prix fixe. Why just eat ordinary food when you can dine as if you were in a foreign country? Also a weekday three course daily dinner special is served for $12.00 Gourmet food at affordable prices. PILOT HOUSE. The Pilot House at 142 Decatur Street. Cape May has made some changes. The interior has been over and is even more attractive than ever, but the same great food and drinks awaits the Pilot House's loyal customers In the heart of Cape May's Washington Street mall, the Pilot House still offers its famous Happy Hour Fridays from 4 to 6. with the same delicious hors d'oeuvres Same great seafood, steaks and cocktails too Live-music by Bill Watson Trio Friday and Saturday nights. PROMENADE. Sound new in Cape May? Well, yes, it is — but it isn't quite The Promenade is the former Montreal Restaurant and Lounge, located on Beach Drive at Madison Avenue Grand opening is scheduled for May 10. Still managed by the well known Hirsch family, the Promenade will be a totally different atmosphere with greenhouse decor but the same excellent food will be served to many of the same loyal dedicated customers along with new Promenade friends The Promenade will continue the Hirsch family tradition of serving a full menu, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner Same large inventory of spirits too. See you at the Promenade in May?
