The Who's Last (MCA) is, as the title implies, the final album by English legends The Who. Drawn from their farewell tour, this live two-record set is a must of Who fans as a parting token. However, those who aren't blindly in love with The Who will hear a band that, didn't age as well as fellow 60 s bands such as The Rolling Stones and Kinks The material here is great, but it's awkwardly performed by a group that sounds tired. The saddest thing about The Who's Last is that The Who didn't go out in a blaze of glory, but hung in there until all the excitement was gone. KICKING AROUND the Los Angeles scene for the past few years. The Textones have finally landed a record deal. Midnight Mis sion (A&M) makes the wait worthwihile. Frontperson Carla Olson is a dynamic guitarist, writer, and lead singer. Her solos are generally thrilling and her material often features biting lyrics over a crisp, guitar-based sound. Her fellow bandmates — especially saxophonist Tom Morgan — give her material able support. Not even guests such as The Electric Flag's Barry Goldberg. Ry Cooder or ex-Byrd Gene Clark can steal the thunderfrom The Textones. If you like Tom Petty or

The Stones more than, let's say Culture Club or Frankie Goes to Hollywood, then The Textones are for you. HAILING FROM New York. The Del-Lords' debut album. Frontier Days (EMI America) is chock full of rich, exciting rock and roll. Their songs might lack flash, but the melodies are instantly memorable and the guitar riffs are short and to the point. Watch out Blasters and Dave Edmunds, because The Del-Lords are making their move. FOR YEARS. Richard Thompson has been driving critics to their dictionaries to find the right adjectives to praise his guitar playing. Across A Crowded Room (Polygram) will, no doubt, have the same effect. Thompson, because of his work with Fairport Convention and Morris On. is usually regarded as a folk musician, but that's only partly true. This, like most of his previous work, finds the guitarist pulling off riffs, breaks, and solos that run the gamut from rock to folk to blues to country to jazz. His playing demands to be heard. This isn't to slight his compositions and vocals, both of which are consistently interesting, but to point out that even if Richard Thompson couldn't write or sing, he'd be worth supporting.
