The coming of spring and its warmer temperature with elevated relative humidity gives dog owners a few more problems with which they must cope. Springtime brings along with it the start of heartworm season, a greater number of fleas, both outside and inside the house and also an increase in seasonal allergies due to a higher pollen count. The latter problems become worse in later spr ing: however, the necessity of blood testing for heartworm disease in early spring prompts me to discuss heartworms in this week's column. HEART WORM DISEASE in dogs is a mosquito-borne parasitic problem, which can occur in any age dog. large or small, purebred or mixedbred. In its end stages, with large and numerous adult heartworms in the heart and lungs, dogs can lapse into congestive heart failure These dogs can show signs such as exercise intolerance, breathing difficulty. coughing and in general have an unhealthy look about them Sometimes when a dog in endstage heartworm disease is presented to a veterinarian, little can be done except keep the animal comfortable. IN OTHER cases, depending on the health of the pet, treatment to remove the worms medically may be an alternative. Consultation with your veterinarian is important, as early detection may save the dog's life. The adult heartworms in the dog reproduce and release small larvae (call ed microfilariae) into the circulation of the dog. The larvae, because of their small size, can lodge in microscopic vessels of various organs and cause localized damage EVENTUALLY some larvae are found in the small vessels underneath the skin. This is when the mosquito is called upon to help spread the heartworms offspring to other dogs The mosquito, in sucking blood from the dog. picks up some larvae. Those larvae in time molt, becoming more mature in the mouthparts of the mosquito That same mosquito, with maturing larvae on board, bites the same dog or another dog and the heartworm larvae enter the circulation again From that second mosquito bite the larvae migrate to the heart to become adults and start the cycle anew. WHETHER YOU are an all-year resident or a summertime resident of New Jersey, your dog should be tested for heartworms by your veterinarian each year at this time. The heartworm test is a simple blood test which gives your veterinarian a fairly definitive idea of whether your dog harbors heartworms or not. Many ways of analyzing the blood sample for evidence of heartworms are available to your veterinarian and he will

use that method which suits his practice and equipment. WHEN YOUR dog has been tested and found to be heartworm negative, you. as the dog's owner, are faced with some decisions concerning the use of heartworm preventative. Since the heartworm is spread by mosquitos and there is no vaccine, your dog should be protected using an oral preventative drug given daily. The preventative drug is diethyl carbamazine (DEC) and has been used in dogs for many years in parasite control. Many people in mosquito prone areas (all of New Jersey) have become accustomed to giving the heartworm preventative every day. just as they routinely feed and water their dogs. SOME PEOPLE may elect to give heartworm preventative all year because they are less likely to have a memory lapse and forget about testing the dog in the spring or give the daily dose of preventative, DEC is given approximately nine months out of the year, on schedules such as April 1 to Dec. 31. to correspond with mosquito season and a period of time thereafter Oral preventative comes in many forms such as liquid, tablet, flavored tablet, and powder. AVAILABILITY of the various forms depends on the area in which you live. It is dosed according to the weight of the dog and is best given directly into the mouth of the dog. Heartworm preventative placed in the food will often be left in the bowl by discriminating canine palates DEC should NOT be given to heartworm positive dogs, as it will possibly cause shock and sudden death. That is why your veterinarian will stress testing before heartworm preventative is renewed for the year. DOG OWNERS should be well-versed in the serious consequences of heartworm disease and ask their veterinarian or his staff if there are any points which are unclear Dogs should be, at least, tested every year and preferrably placed on heartworm preventative each year as well. Should your dog prove to be positive in the test for heartworm presence, your veterinarian will endeavor to explain to you any options for treatment which i might be available to rid your pet of the parasite or to temporarily lessen the clinical signs, of advanced heartworm disease. It is best to prevent the disease by consulting with your veterinarian every year at this time. Finishes Boot VILLAS — Marine Pvt. William J.
