County Library by Kathleen Duffy
One of this year's proponents of National Library Weak as shown on our READ posters is the Divine Bette Midler. So I would like to recommend her biography. As outrageous, joyful and funny as the performer herself, it's entitled The Divine Bette Midler by James Spada. This led me to the card catalog in search of other divine titles that I might recommend for your reading pleasure; what I found was a small but broad spectrum of books I would like to bring to your attention. The first book is entitled The Divine Art of Living selections from Baha 'i' writings which will open the philosophical basis of this faith for critical thinking I DARE SAY this is a faith unfamilar to many and for world understanding I myself like to read and understand the foundations of many religious NATO Drill For Keenan OCEAN CITY - Staff Sgt. The Divine Comedy, by Dante Alighieni, may be one of those great world classics that you've always meant to get around to reading but never have — what better time than during National Library Week? We have The Divine Comedy in several editions, some annotated, some in blank verse etc., I myself have found the John Ciardi translation to be most enjoyable. Don't deny yourself this ageless story. Borrow a copy this week, The Divine Dancer; a Biography of Ruth St. Denis was the next divine find on the shelves. Ruth St. Denis was a performer, mystic and major figure in the development of modern dance in the early years of this century. SHE DANCED for King Edward VII, was sketched by Rodin and founded the Denishawn dance company that spawned Martha Graham and other trend setters. In her 50s she fell in love with a Chinese poet/philosopher, in her 60s she became an ardent feminist and worked in an aircraft factory. In her 70s she returned to the stage still effortlessly graceful. The Divine Comedy of Pavel Tchelitchew is a biography by Parker Tyler about an exiled Russian painter. A selfEuropeanized and then Americanized portrait painter and stage designer, Paul Tchelitchew died in 1957. The book captures a man who was a prophet as well as a painter, a fabulous personality at once modem and timeless; it is an attempt to be a portrait of an artist and his art seen simultaneously in depth. HIS LIFE WAS peopled by the great — Edith Sitwell, Gertrude Stein, Igor Stravinsky, Serge Diaghilev, George Balanchine, Alice Astor, Salvador Dali, and a host of others. For those of you interested in art, this, biography may have been undeservedly overlooked. For the heavy thinkers among you, a book of philosophy entitled The
Divine Milieu by pierre Teilhard de Chardin a meditation on man's role in the cosmic drama. The Divine Pastime; Theatre Essay by Harold Clubman, a neminent director, critic, teacher illuminate every element of theatre plays and their production; playwrights; actors, audience; and the nature of theatre criticism itself. In these essays are included evaluations of a full array of modern playwrights such as Albee, Beckett, Giraudoux, Ionesco, LeRoi Jones, Pinter and O'Neill; he also covers every form from Kabuki to the musical, from Elizabethean to the NEW Theatre. If you can't get theatre tickets, go vicariously with this book. FICTION LOVERS may want to look up The Divine Mistress by Frank Slaughter. Set in the rich, baroque world of the renaissance in Italy and Spain, where Antonio Servetus, a teacher considering entering a monastery, discovers Bot-
ticelli's Venus and Lucia Bellarmi, who looks disturbingly like the girl in the portrait. The Inquisition, medical life and suspense make this old novel sparkle with life. David Thunder; the Life and Death of the Kamikazes by Bernard Millot will appeal to the history buffs by studying the philosophy and national self-sacrifice known as the kamikazes. Even local history is found in the book The Divine Covenant Fulfilled in the Ancestral Family History of the LawrenceHughes and Eldredge Generations of Cape May County. If you were so inclined your "divine" reading could include books written by authors whose last name was Divine — adding such topics as maritime exploration, foreign policy, the Cuban Missle Crisis, Eisenhower and the Cold War and several others. Just pick a topic or even a word like "divine" and open the doors of your mind.
