From The Principal By Stanley Kotzen Principal, Lower Cape May Regional High School

There is one organization in this country that can legitimately claim that honor is its middle name. That organization is the National Honor Society, and we inducted our new members in a ceremony befitting their recognition in the auditorium last week. On hand for the program were the parents and families, the teachers and board of education members who had gathered to pay tribute to these youngsters who had been selected for their scholarship, leadership, character, and service to this school and community These students had conducted themselves with honor and provided us with an opportunity to acknowledge formally our appreciation for their efforts. THE NATIONAL Honor Society was established in 1921 with the hope that the organization would recognize and foster academic achievement while developing "other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy". Now, in its 64th year, the National Honor Society has established a reputation for excellence and boasts a membership of more than 20,000 chapters. It has survived charges of elitism and occasional litigation over its selction and removal policies by the sheer weight of its numbers and its tradition. Its principles, based on the imperative that students who excel academically must also make use of their talent and determination in community service, have gone unchallenged. ACADEMIC achievement is the first and most significant of the criteria for selection. Students must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of B, or 3.0, during Safe Homes Talk Slated SEA ISLE CITY - The Cape May County PTA will host an educational program about the Safe Homes project being initiated in the area at 1 and 7 p.m. Tuesday. April 16, at the city public school, 4500 Park Rd. here. Dee Koch, president of the N.J. Federation for Drug Free Communities, will explain the program. Safe Homes is a non-blaming solution to the adolescent drug/alcohol problem in New Jersey The program had been endorsed by Sheriff Jim Plousis and County Superintendent of Schools Robert Bongart. their first five semesters in high school They then become eligible for selection and are required to submit a background vita on their extra-curricular and; community activities. A faculty council is established to review the applications and attempt to answer such questions as: what contribution has the candidate made to school, classmates and community? What is the student's attitude and performance record in terms of service? The council recommended 26 new members this year to bring our chapter membership to 40. Each of these youngsters is the embodiment of what is best in public education, and they are a credit to their parents and teachers who provided the direction for these productive young lives. OUR CEREMONY was not only a tribute to the members of the National Honor Society, but to their parents and teachers as well. They were the ones who made a commitment to instill in these young people a sense of right and wrong, a sense of dedication, and a sense of honor. They were the ones who imposed their will on these students with their vision of what each one of these youngsters might become. So, in many ways the National Honor Society induction was a tribute to adult efforts and youthful responses. It is one of life's pure pleasures to see youth respond to life's challenges and handle the pressure to excel with a sense of grace and accomplishment — a of honor. There is enough hope in that to sustain even the most cynical among us.
