Then he reached for the telephone. "I want to see who's around this week," he said. "You don't want to waste any time." I said. "You only have nine days before it's time to go back ." While No. 1 dialed. I stared. Six feet tall. A mustache Muscles. Bedroom eyes, oh God. NO. 1 SENSED me staring. He turned to me "You're shrinking. Mom," he said "I'm shrinking vertically." I said, "but not much horizontally." "Really, Mom," said No. 1 staring at me. "you don't look bad for your age. " "I guess that's a compliment," I said philosophically "Sometimes last summer you seemed sillier than the kids," said No. 1. "Senility," I said. NO. 1 WENT to the toaster oven and took out the pastries. He poured himself a glass of milk. "At school," he said. "I'm usually too busy to go shopp- . ing and buy milk." "I'm usually too busy to go shopping too," I said, "but if I didn't. No. 2 would starve. Me. I could use a little starvation." No. 1 surveyed me again. "You've lost weight, haven't you. Mom?" he said. "I think so," I said. "But on the other hand, sometimes'' I think it's just that my center of gravity has shifted " No. 1 went into the living room and turned on the TV. "At school I'm usually too busy to watch TV." he said. "At home I'm usually too busy to watch TV." I said. We watched TV together "This show is just a meaningless escapade into banality." said No. 1.
