County Library by Kathleen Putty
Ever wanted to write a book — maybe a novel — and actually have it published? Ever finish a book and decide you could have written a better Story? Most people have at least one section or period of time in their lives that could stack up to any program, soap opera, play or novel for suspense, intrigue or humor. I myself just know that Erma Bombeck must have my house or person bugged for column ideas. So don't just sit there— put that pen, pencil or typewriter key to paper. Don't know where to start? Well, the second step in writing the great American novel is to take a trip to the Cape May County Library,
where we have a wide selection of books on writing and getting published— how to write suspense fiction, humor, biographies, romance science fiction, magazines articles, non-fiction and even scientific papers. A RECENT library addition is How to Write a Romance and Get It Published, by Kathryn Falk (808.02 H) discusses the types of romance novels— six, a list of romance publishers telling how many they publish per season, average length, and what type their looking for — all in the first chapter. There are also interviews and helpful hints from leading authors such as Janet Dailey, Violet Winspear and Patricia Gallagher. And does it carry the nitty gritty stuff? Yes— there are chapters on "building sexual tension", breathing life into your characters", "mixing fact with fiction" and "research methods for historical romances", among others. Plotting and Writing Suspense Fiction is for all of you who have that great detective novel lurking in the closet, or who would turn your armed forces experiences into the hottest spy novel of the decade. IF YOU WANT to start small and work your way up to that bestseller, magazine articles take less time and are easier to sell. Magazines also span the entire span of fiction and information known to man. Magazine Article Writing by Mary T. Dillion will help you write those non-fiction articles like; how-to articles, self-help articles, humor, interviews, and personal experience stories. It also covers how and when to write queries, specialized markets, et. Once written Write On Target: Triple Your Magazine Sales Through Magazine Market Analysis by Connie Emerson will guide you through the revision and submission process, helping to avoid the more common mistakes. IN THE REFERENCE department the County Library buys the yearly updated Writers Market. which tells you where to sell your short stories, articles, books, poetry, novels, plays, fiction, scripts, fillers, gags and photos to 4,000 potential markets and helps to identify throe which would be a waste of &me because they do'norifiandle your type of material It also covers agents, contests and a look at the greeting card market. The Writers' Manual. also found in the reference department, covers the mechanics of writing and getting published. Now that you know where to look, you've got NO excuse not to get that story ready for publication. I would also like to request the local authors let the library know of your publication date so we can supply your neighbors withy reading copies. Good luck! See Coupon For 50c OFF On Classified Page

COURT HOUSE - Expanded services offered by the county sheriff's department since he took office have been listed by Sheriff James T. Plousis. Included among these were: A new emergency telephone system for the deaf conducted at the County Jail, by which a deaf or hearing imparied person in need of police, fire, or medical aid can notify the jail on a home- TDD machine and have helped dispatched by the Jail A NEIGHBORHOOD Watch program was set up in Woodbine Borough and other crime prevention
programs were initiated at the county level. A Child Safety Program with the life-size crime dog McGruff as instructor for children was established. The sheriff's staff has presented the program at five schools and has fingerprinted more than 800 children. Through its public information unit, the department has given over 30 programs explaining its functions to social groups and civic organizations. Plans are also being made, says Plousis, for programs that will have prison inmates do more work details at the jail complex.
