Triathlon Slated For City- June 15

CAPE MAY — The city's 3rd Annual Triathlon, scheduled for Saturday, June 15, has been designated the Eastern Regional Long-Course Championship by the Triathlon Federation, U.S.A. for 1985. In addition, this event, which will attract approximately 300 competitors and thousands of spectators, was awarded a matching grant in the amount of $1,950 by the State of New Jersey's Division of Travel and Tourism. The Cape May Triathlon is one of 58 projects' statewide to revive a matching grant. All grant recipients are expected to help promote the State of New Jersey through its theme and logo "New Jersey and You — Perfect Together". THIS RACE demands the speed, strength and endurance to complete a onemile ocean swim, a 10-mile run and a 50-mile bicycle course. Each of the three stages will be conducted and scored separately. The swim leg will be first at 9 a.m., followed by the 10-mile run at 10:30 a.m. and then the 50-mile bike race beginning at l p.m. This format is the most practical and compatible with the Cape May Point Five-mile run, which will be held the same day beginning at 9 a.m. Triathlon activity will be confined to the Cape May City limits until 1 p.m. so as not to interfere with the Cape May Point Run, which happens to be a major fundraiser for its fire company. SPECTATORS WILL be fortunate enough to take in the Cape May Point Run and most of the Cape May Triathlon in what could turn out to be a field day for the sport enthusiasts After the final event.

whidfi will be the bicycle race, scores will be tabulated, using the lowgross method, to determine the overall place winners. j Awards will be presented to top male, female and age group C.M.T. finishers. All participants will receive shirts, caps, bags and pertinent information prior to the race. Interested triathletes and volunteers can call the Department of Civic Affairs 884-841, ext. 20 or 27.
