Retirement Haven Proposed at Cape
BRIDGETON - "Sojourn" is the name of a new organization which plans to establish two non-profit ecumenical retirement and nursing care centers in Se^th Jersey, the first in Briageton and the second in Court House. The organizer and temporary chairman (until a formal organization is completed) is the Rev. Cornelius E. Schoonejongen,..^ Two others serving with' him until the organizational •structure is completed are William Hack, a retired Internal Revenue Service employe, and the Rev. Dawn Mays of the First Baptist Church, Wildwood. Rev. Schoonejongen is pastor of Berean Baptist
Temple, Bridgeton. THE NEED for such facilities became apparent to the Rev . Schoonejongen last year as his demoni nation was considering the expansion of a retirement home it operates north of Camden. "As I looked around Cumberland County, I realized that we had no such facility despite the fact that we have a popula7 tion which, I venture to say, is older than the national average," said Rev. Schoonejongen. "IN MY OWN congregation, I soon learned that there were a dozen or more people ready to move into su ich.a retirement community next week if only it were located close by," he went on. "Those who work with senior citizens know that people at retirement seldom want to relocate more than 25 miles from where they have spent their entire lives." Schoonejongen emphasized that the centers h$ proposes are not nursing homes but retirement communities to which people in the prime of their lives and still in good health can move. THE RESIDENTS would retain the freedom to go out daily, keep an automobile if thiey wish, and visit family and friends without restriction. But they also would have the assurance that there would be help immediately at hand should they fall ill or injure themselves, the pastor said. The first formal board meeting of the new organization will be held late in April, probably at Berean Baptist Temple. Representatives of major denominations with South Jersey congregations, both pastors and lay members, are invited to call Rev. Schoonejongen at 451-7456.
