Sales increased 18.2 percent to $1,445,682,000 as compared to $1,223,265,000 and net income from continuing operations advanced 12.5 percent to $69,936,000 from $62,167,000. On a per share basis, earnings were $1.69 or 15 percent higher than the $1.47 recorded last year. Rite Aid currently operates 1,299 drugstores in 20 states. In addition, its specialty retailing division includes 190 Circus World toy stores in 23 states, ADAP, Inc. a New England-based automotive parts retailer with 52 units. Encore Books, which has 20 discount bookstores in metropolitan Philadelphia, and Heaven, a small group of contemporary variety stores.
