SCHELLENGER'S LANDING — Douglass Gavetti, 56, and Robert Deweese, 21, of Lower Township were being held Monday in lieu of $100,000 bail each after their arrest here Friday on drug charges. Called a "heavy supplier of drugs in the southern end of the county" by Chief William B. Matthews Sr. of the county detectives, Gavetti was free on bail at the time of his arrest. He, his son, Richard, 24, and seven other suspects were arrested during separate raids several
weeks ago Richard of Bayshore Road, North Cape May. was freed then on his own recognizance. His father was eventually freed after posting $25,000 bail. Matthews confirmed. The younger Gavetti was charged then with possessing hypodermic needles (133) and two counts of possessing stolen property. His father had been charged with possession of: methamphetamine with intent to distribute; stolen property ( three counts ) ; an unlicensed firearm", a dangerous weapon (teargas
grenade); and of hypodermic needles. BESIDES A QUANTITY of methamphetamine (speed) recovered during the Gavettis' previous arrest, police confiscated some $4,000 in stolen property "consisting of guns, steroes, televisions and a video recorder," according to Lower Township Police Sgt. Frank Majane. Last week, Douglas Gavetti, who lives aboard the fishing vessel El Toro at Utsch's Marina here, was charged with unlawful distribution of methamphetamine and conspiracy to distribute it. Matthews said.
Deweese of Wissahockon Avenue, Schellenger's Landing, was charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, the chief added. The suspect is also being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. "These arrests concluded a three-month investigation, by the ... county Task Force, Lower Township and Cape May police department(s), into drug activities in the southern part of the county," Matthews continued Gavetti was a heavy supplier of drugs in ( that area ) . "Gavetti had direct ties with suppliers in the Philadelphia area," the chief said. Other arrests could follow, he said.
One Avalon Realtor Complies: 13 to Go
AVALON — One down, 13 to go. When an April 1 deadline for this borough to enforce a "one-real-estate-sign-per-property" ordinance came and went, the Herald published a photo showing a lot cluttered with signs.
Mayor Rachel Sloan said Realtors would be sent "reminders" about the ordinance, discussed in a Jan. 25 meeting with Realtors. Last week, Avalon's public relations firm, James R. Hurley Associates of Millville, sent a photograph to the news media showing the mayor shaking hands with Dudley Newbold of Newbold Real Estate Co., "one of the first agencies to comply with the regulation." It quoted Newbold saying he thought the one-sign limit was "a good idea and will give a better image to SLOAN SAID Newbold was "nice enough to take the first step." Sloan said police surveyed the borough last week and compiled a list of about 200 lots on which the borough's other 13 Realtors have more than one sign. That list, she said, is going to the zoning officer who will contact each Realtor. The problem, she said, is that some owners list with several Realtors and that owner has to decide which one sign he wants displayed. The mayor said Realtors will be given until May 1 to comply with the ordinance or face "possible fine of a minimum of $50."
