Dear Dr. Beitman: This letter is to request that you write about premenstrual syndrome. I feel it is very important for f the public to better undersland this for several reasons. First and foremost is so that women won't have to be treated like or feel that they are having psychiatric problems, when in fact they have PMS. Some husbands act as if we get bitchy deliberately and can't seem to understand that it is difficult for us to help ourselves. IT'S LIKE an irritant has gotten into your system making you very uncomfortable and less able to react to stress in a useful way. Second is that since it is necessary to cope with PMS, recognizing that you have it is the best way to develop good strategies for dealing with it. I have educated my family to

identify my particular symptoms and to let me know, if I don't already, when I am starting to act up THEY THEN refuse to get into fights with me over petty things and encourage me to do things that make me feel better, like getting exercise and taking warm baths. Friends of mine have it much worse than I do. One woman acts as if she is on drugs and won't drive carpool when she is premenstrual. An artist friend gets so overemotional that her kids try to prevent her from painting because she's been known to destroy beautiful works when she's expecting her period. NOT LONG ago there were articles in the paper about two cases in England

where women committing violent acts were able to get off relatively easy using a defense that PMS affected their actions. As I recall, a barmaid had threatened a policeman with a knife and her lawyer claimed that each month because of PMS she became a "raging animal". Another Englishwoman claimed she killed her boyfriend with a car due to having an extremely aggravated form of PMS. You know, I would believe these could be true stories! I'M NOT VERY happy with the way doctors handle PMS either. Often my friends are offered tranquilizers like valium to handle their symptoms. You can read any woman's magazine and learn that drugs are not the answer! I've been taking vitamin B6, although I'm not sure it helps. A friend said there have been recent warnings about B6 being a dangerous vitamin supplement, so could you please comment on that too? Anyway, thank you for Health Watch. I think it's great because you make everything so understandable to the layman. E.S.R.
