Some cat owners are already quite familiar with the disease Feline Leukemia and its ramifications oflrthe general health of the overall cat population, both on strays and on those with a home. Still other cat owners dread the name Feline Leukemia be they are unfar with the disease am ? afraid of its seriousness. A brief review of the disease is always a good idea, especially in light of the vaccine recently introduced by Norden Laboratories, a division of Smith-Kline drug company. FELINE Leukemia virus (FeLV) infection may be one of the worst-named diseases in the veterinary world (along with the canine disease, "distemper") because often cats infected with the virus show no signs of the typical human leukemia patient that we envision. Although anemia, weight loss, loss of appetite, and bone marrow problems may become progressively apparent to the cat owner, many cats which are FeLV infected never show any of these signs. Though not related to the [ recently discovered disease AIDS, many secondary problems result from FeLV infection, mimicking an AIDS victim's problems. PLEASE NOTE that humans cannot get AIDS from FeLV infected cats. The diseases are not related; only their signs ,\are similar * FeLV as a viral condition tends to lower a cat's immunities to secondary bacterial infections such as infection of the bladder, gums, eyes, nasal passages and chest. The FeLV cat, in essehce. seems to be unable hp withstand routine insults' from viruses and bacteria. Thus the cat appears to the cat owner to always have something "wrong with him" or tends to be a chronically unthrifty cat. YOUR CAT can become infected with FeLV through contact with another FeLV-infected cat. Methods of virus transfer from cat to cat include blood, nasal discharges, saliva, tears, and to a
[ lesser degree, feces and i urine. i • Casual contact outdoors between two cats probably i will not allow adequate viral transfer. Use of the same litterbox, close contact over a longer period of time (including two cats grooming each other) and use of--the same dishes would allow viral transfer from cat to cat. The virus does not easily live on inanimate objects and surfaces, however, so use of the same bed at different times for example, would be less likely to spread the disease. THE BEST conditions for the virus to beVransferred are through licking, sneezing and blood contact. Those body fluids containing the virus must be in immediate contact with another cat in order for viral transfer to easily occur. Household detergents of any kjnd are quite effective against the virus. Estimates vary, but it is thought that approximately one cat in 10 may be infected with feline leukemia virus. Feral cats, or those which are roaming wild, are more likely to be j positive for presence of the virus. MULTI-CAT households, whether the cats are indoors or outdoors, are also more prone to having higher numbers of positive cats One explanation for this is that owners with several cats in their care are more' likely to take in additional cats (strays) and therefore may infect their entire cat household if the new cat were positive for FeLV. \v It is a good idea to test new cats for Fej^V before allowing them the run of the house, and contact with known negative FeLV cats.
