J p. . . , ny Stanley Kotoen n Principal, Lower Cape May Regional High School r nign school
Now that it is probably safe to assume that we have seen the last of the snow for the year, Spring is definitely in the air. (When I came here last July, I was assured that Cape May got snow only when Delaware Bay was frozen, and I have since come to accept that asurance with the same certainty as the phrase •'the 1 check is in the mail". I Spring, the season of 1 rebirth and blossoms and a I general warming of the I heart, comes to a high I school in a very dramatic I fashion. It comes in the form I of a quickened pace and a I realization that the year is I almost at an end. THERE IS a pleasant 1 reflection in the ac- I complishments of eight I months, but an even greater 1 sense of anticipation of I those monumental rites of | spring — the prom and I graduation. These events transcend fa student excitement. They I are family experiences and § right now the first of them is 1 only two and a half weeks & away — the Junior-Senior 9 Prom. The Prom has not really I changed all that much as an | American institution. Get- ■ ting a date is still the key I element. Today you see a lot I more girls asking boys and ■ sharing the expenses than I you would have seen 30 I years ago, but progress is I slow. THE NICEST PART of I liberalizing who asks who is I that more youngsters get to I go to the Prom as "friends," I and they invariably end up I having a better time than ■ those who used to go only on | arranged dates. (Were you I ever one of those people who I helped to "fix-up" a friend ■ who had a car and would I drive to the Prom?) Having gone to proms for I 25 years as a teacher and - ■ administrator it sometimes ■ seem to me that all some 1 kids do is get all dressed up 1 in the best finery that money ■ can rent or buy so that they ] can "break-up" and be re- j conciled. With the help of fl their friends they enact a j series of teenage soap ] operas and all the while they 1 look so beautiful in their for- I mal wear. THIS YEAR our Prom is ] going to be held in our gym- H nasium, which will be trans- ■ formed into a lovely arbor- H eal setting of lights, plants, j fountains and freshly cut fl flowers. The linen table I cloths, candles and the soft ■ music will make it sound j and look like Proms you WAGNER UPHOLSTERY There's gold in that old sofa! have seen and loved. With all the fancy trimmings, nothing will detract -from the joy of the evening — seeing these students in a glamorous setting looking positively glamorous. For
some it is a metamorphosis of staggering proportions to come all the way from sweatshirts and jeans to elegant formal wear. IF ANY PICTURE is worth a thousand words, Prom pictures must be worth many, many
thousands. (Do you still know where your prom picture is?) It is the adult world's way of preserving a moment that is truly to be cherished. There stands your offspring proudly on the arm of his or her date frozen for a moment in a I * I
lovely, quiet, untlireatening situation. Forget for a minute the time you spent shopping for or making the prom gown, forget for a minute the trepidation you feel about the fact that if your children are all growing up you are I t
getting older, forget for a ► minute the last shouting match that left you with genuine doubts about your success as a parent. Enjoy the moment, take the picture. and save it. It's Prom night! (Next week: The Prom \ Part II ).
