From The Principal
By Stanley Kotzen Principal, Lower Cape May Regional High School
Now that it is probably safe to assume that we have seen the last of the snow for the year, Spring is definitely in the air. (When I came here last July, I was assured that Cape May got snow only when Delaware Bay was frozen, and I have since come to accept that asurance with the same certainty as the phrase "the check is in the mail" Spring, the season of rebirth and blossoms and a general warming of the heart, comes to a high school in a very dramatic fashion. It comes in the form of a quickened pace and a realization that the year is almost at an end. THERE IS a pleasant reflection in the accomplishments of eight months, but an even greater sense of anticipation of those monumental rites of spring — the prom and graduation. These events transcend student excitement. They are family experiences and right now the first of them is only two and a half weeks away — the Junior-Senior Prom. The Prom has not really changed all that much as an American institution. Getting a date is still the key element. Today you see a lot more girls asking boys and sharing the expenses than you would have seen 30 years ago, but progress is slow. THE NICEST PART of liberalizing who asks who is that more youngsters get to go to the Prom as "friends," and they invariably end up having a better time than those who used to go only on arranged dates. (Were you ever one of those people who helped to "fix-up" a friend who had a car and would drive to the Prom?) Having gone to proms for 25 years as a teacher and - administrator it sometimes seem to me that all some kids do is get all dressed up in the best finery that money can rent or buy so that they can "break-up" and be reconciled. With the help of their friends they enact a series of teenage soap operas and all the while they look so beautiful in their formal wear. THIS YEAR our Prom is going to be held in our gymnasium, which will be transformed into a lovely arboreal setting of lights, plants, fountains and freshly cut flowers. The linen table cloths, candles and the soft music will make it sound and look like Proms you WAGNER UPHOLSTERY There's gold in that old sofa! have seen and loved. With all the fancy trimmings, nothing will detract from the joy of the evening — seeing these students in a glamorous setting looking positively glamorous. For
some it is a metamorphosis of staggering proportions to come all the way from sweatshirts and jeans to elegant formal wear. IF ANY PICTURE is worth a thousand words, Prom pictures must be worth many, many
thousands. (Do you still know where your prom picture is?) It is the adult world's way of preserving a moment that is truly to be cherished. There stands your offspring proudly on the arm of his or her date frozen for a moment in a
lovely, quiet, unthreatening situation. Forget for a minute the time you spent shopping for or making the prom gown, forget for a minute the trepidation you feel about the fact that if your children are all growing up you are
getting older, forget for a minute the last shouting match that left you with genuine doubts about your success as a parent. Enjoy the moment, take the picture and save it. It's Prom night! (Next week: The Prom Part II ).
