1st, Crest Offer Top Money Market Rates

As they have since last December, First Savings and Loan of Sea Isle City Avalon Awaits 'George' AVALON — First Jersey National Bank/South will open its 43rd George automatic teller machine at the Avalon branch Tuesday, providing banking convenience to thousands of residents and visitors along the county shoreline. "In addition to serving our local customers, this George machine will provide added convenience to the thousands of summer visitors from other areas," said David Repici, regional vice president. The George machine is located in the foyer of the branch, 2009 Dune Dr. Within the last year, George locations have been added in North Wiidwood, Stone Harbor and Avalon, complementing those already located in Cape May, Court House, Ocean - -City and North Cape May. In addition to its own locations in New Jersey, George is also a member of the six-state CashStream network and the national Cirrus network. The affiliations allow customers of other banks in those networks to use their cards in First Jersey's George machines. George card holders of First . Jersey /South may use any CashStream of Cirrus machines in the country. First Jersey will celebrate its newest George opening with a special ribbon cutting 10 a.m. Tuesday, and by offering prizes to anyone who takes a George demonstration at the Avalon branch.

Ocean City Savings & Loan was next highest, with an 8.25 percent rate. First Savings' 7.75 percent was the highest rate on the so-called Super Now. similar to the money market account, but with unlimited checking. Some financial institutions require a $2,500 minimum; some $1,000. Collective Federal Savings & Loan has a passbook money market account that permits unlimited deposits and withdrawals (but no checks) and is paying 8.1 percent. That, too, has a $1,000 minimum. For comparison purposes, the most recent 91-day U.S. Treasury Bill, which used to be the basis of many of these rates, came in at 8.05 percent last week. Following list, in alphabetical order, gives last week's money market interest rates followed by the Super Now interest rates paid by the county's 15 financial institutions.
