Tulip Festival

Tulip King BOBBY MONTGOMERY Being Tulip King would be alot of fun and exciting. have danced for two years in the Festival and learned alot about Dutch customs. Thank you for the good times we have learning about other people. Bobby Montgomery of North Cape May is a third grade student at Maud Abrams Elementary School.

Tulip Queen DANIELLA PATRICE LOMONACO It would be an honor to be selected Queen of Cape May's Tulip Festival. Being Tulip Queen means helping to honor Captain Mey, who founded Cape May, and his heritage. I would like to be a part of Cape May's history. For me. Cape May has been a nice place to live and grow. Daniella LoMonaco of North Cape May is a fifth grade student at Our Lady Star of the Sea School.

It takes five to seven years to grow tulips from seed. The beautiful varigated colors of tulips are the result of a virus attack while the bulbs are in storage. This is frequently done deliberately. • • • The tulip has been known in America at least since 1640, when the Dutch settled on Manhattan Island. Tulip seeds and bulbs have been used as food. The English experimented with them during the 17th Century, but as the bulbs were so expensive, their use in the kitchen was short-lived. The Dutch used them as food when starving under the German occupation during World War II. However, Hollanders didn't find them very palatable.

The tulip plant has only one disease — Tulip Fire (Botrytis tulipae). It isn't too prevalent but once started, it spreads like fire. It usually appears as a result of a warm wet spring. Initial symptoms inelude spotting on blooms and yellow shriveling leaf tips. It can be controlled if caught early.
