Reflexed petals give the flowers a lilylike appearance, and rigid stems and graceful beauty make them ideal for cutting and arrangements. Flower stems are 20 to 24 inches long. Ordering and Care It is best to buy firstclass bulbs from reliable seed stores and dealers. You can get a good idea of prices, varieties, and colors from their illustrated, descriptive catalogs. comparing a few catalogs, you can make a very satisfactory selection but it is still better to see the varieties flowering in a garden or nursery. Order early, and unpack the bulbs as soon as they arrive. This will usually be in late August or early September. Spread the bulbs out carefully to prevent bruising, and keep them in a dry, wellventilated, shaded spot like a bam or a garage. Be sure not to injure the leathery brown skins, which keep the bulbs from drying out. Because mice, moles, or digs may spoil part of the bulb beds, it is wise to buy a few extra bulbs. You can plant these individually in 3-inch pots and plunge them into a corner of the garden at the depth at which you would plant them in the open soil. Use these plants to fill in bare spots when necessary. When. Where. How The best time to plant tulips is in October and the first two weeks of November. September planting may result in top growth before winter, with consequent injury to the foliage. Bulbs planted in late November and December will have to be mulched. Otherwise, too few roots will form before winter to prevent heaving of the bulbs due to freezing and thawing of the ground. Under normal conditions, tulips develop a strong root system before they make any top growth. This root system must be developed before the soil freezes. Bulbs with a 'strong root system will

start prompt growth when spring arrives. Just keep the following in mind: No roots - no flowers; poor 'roots - poor flowers; good roots - good flowgps. FULL SUN causes most intense coloration of the flowers. Partial shade under high trees or where the plants get only morning or afternoon sunshine is satisfactory. Partifcularly under oak trees, the foliage of which develops rather late and which have a deep root system, tulips do very well. A light shade results in later flowering, because of a cooler soil, and a more prolonged flowering period, because of cooler air. ■ Whether you plant tulips > in a formal or an informal I manner depnds on the type of garden and the type of tulip. In a formal garden such groups as Darwins and Breeders ar more appropriate because of their rather stiff outlines. In an informal garden, types like the Cottage, LilyFlowered, and Species tulips seem more fitting because of their graceful contours. Depth of Planting Size and quality of flowers are greatly influenced by depth of planting. Be sure to plant at a uniform depth if you want a mass display, as in formal planting or in large flowerbeds. In informal planting, varying the depth by 1 or 2 inches will result in successive flowering over a longer period. With deep planting, 7 to 8 inches from the base of the bulb to the soil level, only one large bulb, to replace the original bulb, and two or three offsets, or small bulbs, will develop, but the flower quality will be excellent. The soil in the region where the roots will hp must be thoroughly prepared. (Ji.M. Bickart is assistant research specialist, ornamental horticulture, with the N.J. Agricultural Experiment Station .
