Martin To Repeat 'Arcane Ritual'
OCEAN CITY - Astute hermit crab watchers, a smathering of weather prognosticators and a considerable cult following expect Martin Z. Mollusk to become a legend 11 a.m. May 9. This will be the 10th year the pompcrazed crustacean creeps onto the Ocean City Beach at Moorlyn Terrace in an attempt to see his shadow. "Anybody or thing that performs such an "arcane ritual" for 10 seasons deserves to become a legend," say anonymous scholars who remind us that arcane means "mysterious or esoteric". AT ANY RATE, if Martin sees his shadow, summer comes a week early to Ocean City. If not, don't worry, it arrives on time. Martin has never failed to see his shadow and thus this family resort has enjoyed nine consecutive years of early summer, to the delight of local merchants. "The city will pull out all the stops on this one," promised Mark Soifer, public relations director and Martin's spiritual advisor and chef. "He will be brought to the beach in a 1924 lifeboat recently reconstructed to honor the city's many beach patrol championships. Accompanying Martin will be Miss Ocean City, Little Miss Ocean City, Miss Boardwalk, Little Miss Boardwalk, Miss Splinter Boardwalk and a life-sized MZM facsimilie." THE OCEAN City High School Band, under the direction of Warren Miller, will render inspirational music as Martin is accompanied to the sands, a formality he insists upon. Dancing girls, acrobats and twirlers from the South Jersey School of Baton and Dance will entertain the) world's most famous shellfish as he dawdles on the beach. A huge commemorative cake, sculpted from sand, and bearing the message "Martin Mollusk Crept Here" will be featured at the creep site. Prior to the ceremonies, a brief Boardwalk Run will be held by members of the IRS Gazoo Band Parade Committee, an event which will be held in Ocean City next Spring to mark tax tin\e. THIS PARADE, organized by local , do-gooder Clint Spring Party NORTH CAPE MAY - Xi Beta Tau Chapter. Beta Sigma Phi, recently held a spring rush party for prospective new members at the, home of Barbara Haley.
Campbell, will be an unabashed copy of the notorious DoDa Parades held yearly in California and a few times in Pitman, New Jersey. "We're going to introduce members of the Gazoo Band Parade Committee during MZM Day because the two events are culturally similar," explained Soifer. Prior to his shadow seeking attempt, Martin will be serenaded by big band leader and professional entertainer William Sackett. who will sing the official theme song, "Some Enchanted Morning, you maysee a tree crab across a crowded beach, etc." For information about Martin Z. Mollusk Day contact the Big Crab, Public Relations Department, Ocean City, N.J. 08226. 399-6111.
