on the mark by Marie Mattem J 4 Middle Girls 3-0 In Softball Action

Hot weather baked the Cape May County area last week and the Middle Township girls softball team returned from the Easter break at just about the same temperature. At the beginning of the week, the hits came in bunches against Wildwood as Middle won the game 14 to 4. When the dust cleared, the score book had 18 base knocks for the Panthers. Debbie Todd led the assault with a 4-for-5 afternoon. Jennifer Snyder collected three hits and Melody Coles added three along with three runs scored. Lisa VanArtsdalen struck out 11 Wildwood hitters as she picked up the win. LATER IN THE WEEK. Middle beat Absegami, 14 to 5. It wasn't as pretty as the Wildwood victory, but Middle Township stood at 3 and 0 after it was over. The Panthers fell behind four different times and battled back each time with a little help from the Braves. With the score 5-4 in the fourth inning, Middle took control on a couple of hits, four walks, four wild pitches, three passed balls and an error. Starting pitcher VanArtsdalen was relieved by Kris Wilson who blanked Absegami over the last three innings to nail down # the win. Wildwood faced one of the top softball pitchers in South Jersey when the Warriors faced Hammonton. Vicki Sorentino tossed a one-hitter as Hammonton recorded a 19-0 victory Sorentino struck out nine batters in just five innings of work. It was Ray Scaltrito Day as Lower Cape May faced Wildwood Catholic in baseball action.

Scaltrito smashed two home runs and a double in a 14 to 1 Caper triumph. Scaltrito belted a solo job in the second inning and popped a two-run shot in the fifth. He collected four RBIs ittetne rain-shortened contest. Bruce Fournier backed Scaltrito with a triple and a single. Later in the week, Fournier took top billing in an 8-to-5 win over St. Augustine. Fournier zipped a solo homer and a triple in his 4 for 4 afternoon. With the win Lower Cape May ran its record to 5 and 0 on the season. MIDDLE TOWNSHIP fell to a disappointing 0 and 4 for the year following a 2-0 setback at the hands of the Absegami Braves. Brave's starter George Goldbeck threw a fourhitter and struck out 12 to pick up the shutout. Wildwood beat the Panthers earlier in the week 8 to 5, in a contest halted after five innings because of drizzle And darkness. It was a big fourth inning that did it for the Warriors. In that frame, Andre Harris doubled and Mike Thame drove a two-run homer. Wildwood also benefited from four walks and three stolen bases in the inning. First baseman Gary Robinson went 2 for 3 for the afternoon and Thame finished 2 for 4. Ocean City gave away four unearned runs as the Raiders fell to Vineland 5 to 2. O.C. starter Dave Miller pitched well enough to win, giving up just four base hits. Ocean City's only runs came as Brad Durkin scored in the first inning and the other came home on a Miller ground out. IN GOLF PLAY. Middle Township ran its slate to 2-1 on the season with a 188-240 win over Wildwood. The Panthers were led by

A 50 from John Davis was tops on the Crusader scorecard. WILDWOOD GOT some fine play in singles action to take a 4 to 1 victory over Middle Township in tennis play. Scott Piro and Bob DeFazio won their matches for the Warriors while Rich Rodgers took home a singles win for Middle Township. Lower Cape May had little trouble with Wildwood Catholic in a 5-0 win. Winners in singles play included Jim Bucknell, Dan McMahon and 'Joe Hill. REMARKS: The playoffs are under way in the N.B.A. and the N.H.L. and one, of the Philly teams looks real good while another seems to lack that killer instinct. The Philadelphia Flyers may be playing the best hockey going right now. It seems that this young team won't let anyone push tfiem around and go after it for 60 minutes. The Philadelphia 76ers on the other hand look real good for a couple of minutes in each game. They can't and won't put teams away like they used to What is the problem? I don't know, but I think a big part of it is some of the players are unsure of the roles they are playing. I was never really that good at chemistry. Speaking of chemistry, any one know a good chemist we can send to the Phillies. Maybe a witch doctor? FINALLY. I would like to take a few lines to say that this is my last column for the Herald. challenge and time will not permit me to keep up with the column the way I would like to. Most of my space has been taken up with high

school sports and I hope that all readers of the Herald-Lantern-Dispatch will keep supporting the kids. It is a very important part of development in a

4 young person's life and should not be, overlooked. I've enjoyed this experience working for this paper. Thanks for looking in each week. v
