March of Dimes Walk-A-Thon Set

WILDWOOD - County residents are invited to participate in a Walk-A-Thon for the March of Dimes to help prevention of birth defects in this city Saturday, starting at 9 a.m., at the Information Bureau on the boardwalk at Schellinger Ave. Wildwood Mayor Vic DiSylvester will lead the march. 1 Registration forms may be picked up now at the Information Bureau or walkers may register that morning. The marked 30-kilometer route has several checkpoints, with refreshments at each. The walk covers the boardwalk, goes along several streets and ends at its starting point. WALKERS RAISE funds for the March of Dimes by gathering sponsors who pledge money for each kilometer walked. County businesses are invited to have several employes walk together as a team, representing their company. This; is called "Teamwalk". Several communitySs members and businesses

are contributing to the walk as volunteers donating leadership and materials. They are: Mayor DiSylvester, Maj. Steve Hampton, N.J. National Guard; John Kirk, teamwalk chairman and coordinator of WaWa Food Markets; and Freeholder William E. Sturm Jr. Contributing companies include: Herr's Potato Chips. Tastykake Bakery, South Jersey Gas Co., U.S. Coast Guard, Marine National Bank, Cape May Rotary Club, 7-Eleven, Cape May Health Department, First Jersey National Bank, and BurdetteTomlin Hospital. complishments of their volunteers during this week of April 22-28, which has been designated National Volunteer Week by President Reagan. Some 400 seniors, 60 years old and over, contribute 75,000 hours of volunteer service in various institutional settings in the county. RSVP is one of the Older American Volunteer Programs managed by ACTION, a Federal Agency, and sponsored locally by the County of Cape May. THE FOSTER Grand Parent Program is another ^ OAVP operating in tfifey i county. RSVP provides a ^ minimal reimbursement : for out-of-pocket expenses : incurred while i volunteering. < Some of the sites in the I county where Senior 1 Volunteers serve are: the I five senior eenters and i seven congregate meal 1 sites operated by the County Department of Aging, < Burdette Tomlin Hospital, i Crest Haven Nursing S Home, Archway Medical t Day Care and congregate t services in Wildwood, 1 Youth Services Shelter, t

etc. A unique service is provided by the Audiometer Team, consisting of seven senior volunteers who perform hearing tests for young children in the various elementary, Head Start and private schools in the coQnty. An average of fifteen schools a year are served. OVER 200 senior adults were tested last summer at various senior centers during July. A gathering of senior adults who refer to themselves as "the vGroupies" and meet at Victorian Towers, Cape May, -kijit and crochet articles uM^ as lap-robes, shouioerettes, mittens, socks, etc. which are distributed to Wobdbine Center and various nursing homes in the county. Over 250 such articles were distributed year. Jim Welsh is the Director of RSVP, which is at the Social Services Building. Seniors who might be interested in volunteering their services for whatever length of time can contact the office at 886-9556.
