( Continued from last week) Two major points about FeLV ( Felina Leukemia Virus* to note are: 1) A cat in a one-cat household is probably FeLV negative, unless it has had contact with a FefcV positive cat or contracted the disease from iLs mother or queen. Stray cats, which have been adopted, once again, have a higher risk of being positive for FeLV because of their more frequent contact with FeLV positive cats in the wild population. 2) HUMANS ARE not able to contract Feline Leukemia. The virus appears to be speciesspecific, meaning that neither your dog, your bird, your guinea pig. nor you could contract this catinfective virus. it attacks and lives only in the cat's body when in its commonly contagious form. Laboratory vyorkers who are exposed to the virus routinely have shown no evidence of infection. Veterinarians have also been found to have no signs ef FeLV infection, even after frequent exposure. BLOOD TESTING for FeLV in your cat is generally available in your veterinarian's office, or he can opt to send out blood smears for analysis by an outside lab. There are two major ways to test for FeLV at present. One test is usually performed in the veterinary office, and can detect virus presence in the blood of your cat. A second test can detect the presence of virus within the blood cells of your cat-. Either test coming up positive would normally iead your veterinarian to assume that your cat is a FeLV positive cat. with clinical signs of desease or without. THERE IS NO cure for FeLV. generally supportive care and isolation may be prescribed by your veterinarian Remember, your FeLV positive cat is a threat to your other cats and cats in your neighborhood. Euthanasia or putting the cat to sleep permanently may be the only alternative in cases where the cat is quite debilitated and. has a poor prognosis. A vaccine is now available to protect your cat from getting FeLV. Your cat should be tested before vaccination so that you and your veterinarian can assume your cat is starting with a clean slate. THE VACCINE is more expensive than others your cat receives because of the manufacturer's research, development and patent costs over the last 10 years. Call your veterinarian for information concerning testing, vaccinations and his recommendations for your particular feline family. An excellent handout has been published by Norden Labs concerning the new vaccine. Though no cure is on the horizon for Feline Leukemia viral infection, at least the new vaccine gives us a small weapon I with which potentially to lower the number of FeLVinfected cats in the general population and lengthen the expected lifespan of our feline friends.
