STONE HARBOR - ! Because they are learning ' the importance of dune [ grass, sopie 30 borough students have figuratively I leaped into the breach on ! the beach. The students, under the i guidance of teachers and 1 the Realty Owners Association, are taking part in the borough's Project Dune Grass, which was to get under way yesterday. PLUGS OF the hardy seashore grass planted at this time of year are expected to flourish during the growing season and help hold the fragile sandhills against erosion by winter storms.
The dunes took a savage beating in 1984, but have been making a good recovery with the aid of sand fencing along the waterfront** The spring, the new dunes need new dune grass. The borough 'found a supplier, but no one to do the planting at this critical time. THE BEACH committee of the ROA, which monitors beach conditions all year, approached school officials with the suggestion that students might learn something by taking part. "One of our trustees recalled working with school children in such a
project some years ago. and it gave the children new respect for our dunes and why they must be protected," said Robert Henderson, chairman of the ROA's beach committee. Donald Wendorf, school administrator, contacted parents of Stone Harbor Elementary School students for necessary permission, and 30 youngsters, from 5th through 8th grades, were enlisted for the project.
