ELIZABETH COCHRANE Seaman is better known as Nelly Bly. Peggy Hull of the Cleveland Plain Dealer was hired by Newspaper Enterprise Association and sent to France in World War I. Traveling as far as Siberia with the troops, she became the first women war correspondent officially accredited by the War Department. Mary Margret McBride is regarded as the "First Lady of Radio." It's quite possible she is remembered by many of you. She was on the air from 1934 until 1960. Pauline Frederick is known as television's first successful newswoman. Told by Edward R. Murrow that her voice was not authoritative enough for radio, _ she would eventually make ' a name for herself as a correspondent at the U.N. for NBC from 1953 to 1972. ARE THERE others? There are many more The library can introduce you to all these women and more. There are general histories such as Up From the Footnote by Marion Marzoff.^ There are biographigj such as Anchorwoman by Jessica Savitch, and there will soon be a video tape of a recent program held at the library, featuring two women journalists currently working in radio. Miss Gerri Smith and Miss Laurel Wyner. This program offers insights into the field of broadcasting today. The tape could be used in communication classes, career classes, women studies. or private viewing. It offers those of you who missed the program to see briefly into this area of journalism. The field of women in journalism is an interesting one and may be the perfect idea for that term paper due by the end of the year. We have the material at the library and welcome your interest on this and other topics. > AARP Meeting COURT HOUSE - Township of Middle, Chapter 1182 of the American Association of Retired Persons will hold its May meeting with election of officers 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, in Fellowship Hall of the First Methodist Church, Main Street.
