Avoiding Wormy Apples COURT HOUSE - Homeowners who harvested a crop of wormy apples from backyard trees last fall can prevent injury this year by starting early to follow a regular insect pest control program, according to Larry New bold, county agricultural agent The two most important insect pests that damage k apples in New Jersey are 1 the codling moth and the apple maggot. The codling moth larva < worm > tunnels in the apple core and causes many developing fruit to drop prematurely from the tree. It is this in- * sect that has inspired the "half a worm" joke. THE ADULT apple maggot. a fly. lays eggs just beneath the apple skin, and the developing larvae feed near the surface, leaving brownish streaks in the ap^ pie flesh The egg-laying sites of the fly frequently cause the apple skin to appear dimpled and blotched with green r Most homeowners notice this type of insect injury when the fruit commences to ripen However, the actual damage takes place 1 much earlier Apple pest control should begin before blossoming and continue at specified intervals as the fruit develops during the summer If you are not willing to apply sprays you really shouldn't plant an apple tree in the backyard. If you are serious about growing fruit you can be proud of. get a copy of the leaflet "Apple Spray Schedule for New JerseyHome Orchards", and follow the suggestions for the best and safest pesticides to use and when to use them. You can get a free copy from your Cape May County Extension Service. 465-5115.

-The Classic Corner One day alone by the harbor I take a look around To see what goes on before me And taking in each sound I notice the many colors Reflecting upon the bay As I watch for last minute sailors To be heading in this way It's known to be a refuge For sailors on the go But it's shown its side of anger f To those of us who know But all and all it's peaceful And the scenes are all too great For this is home to our vessels Each one in its own place •«_- * It's been called the Classic Corner For that's the Wooden End The feeling that we give one Is for the one who remembers when Vessels of wood that teli a story The mysteries of its years gone by We refurbish it so gently Never wanting her to die Its work can yet be painful But the result is well worthwhile As I sit along the bay here I just look at her and smile. (This poem about Cape May Harbor by Cindy Loos is dedicated to all the local sailors and passersby who are looking forward to fair winds ahead )
