County Suffering Litterbug Plague

By LARRY NEWBOLD Cape May County is 1 1 undergoing a plague of a I new insect — Homo Sapien I I "swinus litterus." This inV / sect is more distructive } / than the gypsy moth or any ' other insect that we have come in contact with to date. Since we are in the tourist business in Cape May County and promote not only the ocean and beaches but the mainland as well, it is important that this pest be controlled. If you haven't picked up on the topic by now. what I am talking about is the amount of trash and litter that is starting to proliferate all over thecounty. There is hardly a backwoods road that is not becoming a dump or

depository for used fur- ; niture. chairs, ect. MAN Y O'' mir visits now ' have a cnance to see almost all of Cape May County since they are staying campgrounds and frequently walk and bicycle around the area. With rising costs for using the new landfill of the county Municipal Utilities Authority, this littering disease seems to be getting out of hand. Members of the Cape May County Campground Association have also expressed concern about this increase in dumping throughout the county. George Conover. helicopter pilot for the county Mosquito Commission, mentioned that I should see the view from a helicopter and then I would realize how

serious the problem is becoming I TOOK I P George s invitation for an extensive j chopper ride to get a look at just what is going on here. Monday. April 22. I was ^treated to a real bird's-eye view of the county compliments of the mosquito commission. Having flown light planes and jet aircraft. I was very impressed with the I helicopters and the fact I that they are being used to control mosquitoes here in • Cape May County Judy Hansen. Superintendent of the mosquito commission, is to be commended for the excellent skills of her pilots and maintenance staff. With the helicopters they can reach areas in a matter of minutes and do work that was never possible before using granular larvicides GEORGE ANI) his staff - had already voiced their | concern about the growing t trash problem and were able to show me some real sites It is not hard to see these areas when you are flying 250-350 feet "off the ground Much of the trash construction debris, with a good collection of used and abandoned refrigerators, washers, ect Most of the wood will decompose in time, but the man-made items will be around for hundreds of years There is no question fp= Benefit Set j ; GREEN CREEK - The ] Green Creek Volunteer 1 Fire Co No 1 will hold an I "all you can eat' pancake I 7 ami p m. ] Sunday. that this is p problem that should be addressed before it continues any longer. Controlling trash dumpin,.' in the woodlands of Cape May County is not a one person iob. but it is everyone's job! If you spot someone dumping in the woods by all means get their ficense plate number and report it to the police I think it is time that the midnight dumpers get the message If you knovfr of areas that

have problems such as this, you might even take some of your I K-al officials on a tour I am sure that most of the officials are not aware of the problem and certainly do not condone this type of activity. Once they become aware of this, then they can hopefully take corrective actions Let's all take corrective actions • now to eliminate Homo Sapiens "swinus litterus" before it gets out of control.
