England's The Kinks enter their third decade with a solid collection of tunes, Word 0/ Mouth (Arista). Longtime fans should be pleased with its consistency. Ray Davies' confident, yet homey vocals, and the band's tight musicianship — especially Dave Davies' forceful guitar breaks. The only drawback is that there aren't any songs that stand out as potential classic Ray Davies tunes. This is the final album for original Kink drummer Mick Avory, who quit during the recording, and the overall sound sticks to a basic mainstream approach, indicating The Kinks are content to play it safe. Still, those are relatively ' minor gripes, as Word Of J Mouth is strong enough to indicate The Kinks' future is t artistically bright, s RECENTLY, there have been several Duke Ellington 1 live albums issued. First Annual Tour Of The Pacific Northwest. Spring 1952 (Folkways. 632 Broadway. New York. N.Y. ( 10012) is a stunning two-record box set that brings together performances from a variety of settings. Despite coming from different shows, although from the same tour, there's definitely consistency in the playing. As can be expected, there are fine, rich solos, excellent material, including Ellington classics such as "Take The "A" Train." "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)", and "Mood Indigo," and a healthy dose of the warm, gentle humor of Duke Ellington. A worthy addition to any record collection. I HAVE TO say, the same goes for All Star Road Band, (Dr. Jazz, 1414 Ave. of Americas, New York, N.Y. 10019). Inline, 1957 this was cut by Ellmgton at a dance in Carrolltown, Pa. It was a hot night with drummer ? Sam Woodyard and Ellington driving the orchestra hard. Plenty of inspired soloing from Ray Nance. Clark Terry. Ellington, and Johnny Hodges. . Duke Ellington's music was so,full of life, joy, and passion it's sad knowing his death deprived us of one of the best composers, pianists, and bandleaders our country has ever produced. His melodies and arrangements touched the souls of more than jazz fans, and we should count our blessings Classes Set In Dancing CAPE MAY - The city I will offer dance classes as part of its Summer Recreation Schedule beginning June 3. that labels continue to issue his music. Bob Hope is a true comic genius. His witty one-liners have entertained millions, yet Bob Hope the singer has been unjustly ignored. In Hollywood (MCA) is a delightful collection of songs that are, mostly, from films like Road To Bali. Some Like It Hot. and Thanks For The Memory. These aren't solo performances, as Hope shares vocal chores with ShirleyRoss, Peggy Lee and Bing Crosby. Bob Hope wasn't as technically accomplished as his partners, but his smirking, goodtime edge more than made up for his shortcomings. In Hollywood will bring back memories to many, but, hopefully, it'll make more people aware of Bob Hope the singer.
