Wetlands to Give New Birding Class

STONE HARBOR - Everyone who has ever been awed by the majestic flight of a Great Blue Heron will enjoy the new birding class with Dave Ward, scheduled to begin 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. May 22, at the Wetlands Institute here. The class will feature three days of different activities. all related to the art of birding. The first class May 22 will introduce the basic techniques and equipment needed for bird watching. Ward will also show some slides from his personal collection, which contains photographs of species of birds from all around the United States and Central America. THE CLASS May 24 will include a trip to Delaware Arts Depts. ■ Set Exhibit I „ ERMA — The Lower I Cape May Regional High School Practical Arts and Fine Arts Departments will host their a'Jiual exhibition Thursday evening May 23, beginning at 7. Included in the show will be Home Economics exhibits, Arts exhibits and Industrial Arts in woodworking, wood carving and drafting. There will also be a raffle of a student-made cedar chest, food and bake sale and wooden items sale. Admission is free.

Bay to observe shore birds and the horseshoe crab egg feast. The final class May 29 will feature an evening visit to the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary, where hundreds of birds of seven species can be observed as they return to their nests for the night. Ward received a degree in biology from the University of Miami, and while there, took several courses in ornithology. However, most of his expertise in birding is the result of extensive reading and active participation in field work. HE HAS TRAVELED to such places as Trinidad and Panama, photographing and studying birds in these tropical setting. He has also traveled throughout the United States, photographing birds as far away as the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. A resident of Avalon, Ward has shared his knowledge and spectacular photographs at the Wetlands Institute this past winter during a lecture entitled ' "Birds of Panama".
