Dredging to Free Locked-in Boaters

AVALON - Boaters whose craft have been virtually locked into their slips behind the 30th Street bridge may find smoother sailing this summer once the state finishes dredging a path for them along Oler Thorofare. "We were given a commitment for this project in both 1961 and 1962," Councilman James Busha said after learning that the project would now go through in June, "but until last week it appeared as if the state was going to renege on the pledge." The entire $360,000 needed for the project is to be funded by state sources, with no impact on local taxpayers, Busha explained. HOWEVER, the state is also responsible for the plight of boaters between 30th and 39th Streets here who, since the late 1960s, have been forced to take a long and circuitous route to gain access to the ocean, a

route that has become so silted it is now accessible only at high tide. Until the state built the 30th Street Bridge in the\ '60s, the boaters had direct access to Townsend Inlet. The bridge, however, was built too low and has blocked this route to all boating traffic ever since. "In 1961, we started work on a project to get Olei. Thorofare dredged to make " it safer and more accessible to the boaters," Busha said. OLER THOROFARE gives the boaters a route around the 30th Street bridge and out to Townsends Inlet. "We were willing to pay for part of the project ourselves back then'," Busha said, "but the state said that since it was its fault it would pay for the entire job. In 1982, Busha said, Donald Graham, assistant commissioner of the

Department of Environmental Protection, told borough officials that the project was on the : state's list, but that a lack of funding would delay it for a year. IN 1983; according to Karate Gass CAPE MAY - The Karate program will continue into the summer recreation schedule starting June 3. The classes will be every Monday and Wednesday 5-7 p.m. at the Franklin Street Civic Center and Ken Farrell will continue as the instructor. Call the Department of Civic Affairs at 384-8411 ext 20 or 27 for more information.

Busha, the borough agreed to have the dredging delayed in deference to the clearing operation that was needed at Hereford Inlet in Wildwood. Late last year, he said, the DEP notified the borough that the project doesn't fit in with a new policy which restricts DEP-initiated dredging programs. DEP officials told us that they had the money, the spoils site was available, but the project didn't fit in with their policy," Busha said. For a while, he said, it looked as if the boaters between 30th and 39th Street would spend another summer of "dockside boating." "Then, a couple of weeks ago," Busha said, ("state Sen. ) Jim Hurley got things moving again."
